*Countertechnique - The Countertechnique is the movement system Anouk
van Dijk developed during her 20-year career as a dancer,
choreographer and teacher. Her company uses the Countertechnique as
their daily training to
prepare adequately and safely for rehearsal and performance. The
method focuses on both mental and physical aspects of dancing and
strives to increase an overall awareness on many different levels
that operate while dancing. With this heightened sense of awareness
the dancer is able to make conscious decisions in training, rehearsal
and performance.
The Countertechnique discards all traditional methods that seek to
control movement from the pelvis or 'the core centre'. Replacing the
static balance of these core centre approaches, the Countertechnique
uses three-dimensional counter directions inside and outside the body
to create a highly dynamic balance, enabling the dancer to execute
extreme movements and to find more versatile ways of changing
direction whilst moving.
The class is a standing up class. It stretches, co-ordinates,
strengthens the body, dancers sweat and really MOVE. The class works
towards big movement combinations and jumping and you learn to
combine different technical aspects: shifting and falling, while
changing direction and maintaining the rotation in the legs while the
torso moves in another direction etc. Dancers learn to move bigger
and more spatially. They loose your fear to take risks and become
fast in changing directions, also on unexpected moments. Since
Countertechnique enhances re-defining directions constantly, the
focus in training goes to processing instead of end gaining.
Participants become less concerned with judging themselves and learn
to work in a - mentally and physically - healthy manner. Daily
training becomes an interesting research instead of a daily curse.
