Suggested topic. Hopefully some of you have run into this. Do other
companies in the area have a true ScrumMaster role? Is it a defined
role with a career track and pay ranges? Or is it like my company
where you are in another role (e.g. app. analyst, lead programmer,
project manager, etc.) and ScrumMaster duties are part of that role's
definition? I'd like to have a discussion with the group on this
matter unless something else is on tap for April.

I think you bring up a great idea for a topic in identifying roles and responsibilities...  specifically Product owner and ScrumMaster because there's a lot of political positioning  associated with picking and sustaining these roles from my experience.

I personally am titled as Project Manager and am given the role of ScrumMaster on scrum teams. However, prior to this i was titled as "Software Developer III" and was the role of ScrumMaster on some projects reporting to the PM and Team-Member on others reporting to the Dev Manager and sometimes both roles switching 'hats' depending on the need. Sometimes a Dev Manager or other functional manager might be a ScrumMaster if they identify that the role is needed to get the job done. Prior to that I was the one developer and I played all 3 roles switching hats as needed. It all works with varying levels of difficulty.

What DOES not work is when you have different people switching in and out of the role because it's not being done properly. Scrum roles are something identified as a 'best practice'... often I have seen dysfunctional teams and someone swoops in and plays the role for a little bit then disappears and someone else jumps in to fill the void.

Regards,

If I understand you correctly you have worked as a Scrum Master under
a PM. How did that work? What responsibilities belonged to the PM
and what to the Scrum Master? Seems like there might be conflicts
unless there were clearly defined roles for each. I would definately
be interested in hearing how that can be managed.

I think we have a topic already set for April.  I'll pencil  this one in for May.  It's a great topic.  Are there any takers for leading the discussion\presentation of their experience?

Thanks,

Martin

I can certainly lead the discussion. However, I will be operating
from a position of weakness since my company has nothing defined in
this area.

We're looking for some people to help seed\lead this discussion this
month. Are there any takers? I figure if we can get four interested
people, they should be able to provide a basis for a lessons learned
\observations and questions for the group to discuss.

Please reply to this thread if you'll lend a hand on this topic.

Thanks in advance.

I would be willing to contribute to the discussion regarding BCBSKS' life
cycle --so far-- of who is/has taking/taken on the role of Scrum Master.

Let me know...

I remember hearing at the April meeting, that the next meeting will take
place in June?

All,

I was contacted by a headhunter, but I'm not interested in leaving my current job. Here's the need. If you are interested, I can put you in touch. The job is in Overland Park.

They need a PM who can implement SCRUM for their software development teams and then
manage the SCRUM process and the software development efforts for the
company. This is a direct hire position to become a permanent part of
their management team.

Darn.  I am an aspiring business analyst/project coordinator type and a student of Agile/Scrum
but it sounds like they want/need a much heavier duty person.

Both companies I have worked at that did things they called "scrum" had a "project manager" functioning as the chair of the periodic scrum meetings.

So the list of contributors/facilitators for the presentation will be:
James Peckham
John Gonzales
Tom Westervelt
Correct?

Tom if you don't mind would you please lead the initiative to get
together for planning? Also let me know if I can assist in this in
any way or if you'd like me to reach out to some other agile coaches
to see if you three can get a call together for an hour or so and
discuss the topic and kick around your thoughts. I think this will
be a great conversation! Thanks to all for your collective efforts.

Martin,
Sure, I can do that.  I'll be attending the Scrum Alliance conference in Atlanta next week so I won't be able to get together until the week of 5/14.  Unless James and John are going to Atlanta as well.
I would be very appreciative of any other input we could receive from some other Agile coaches.  Please reach out and have them contact me with their availability over the next few weeks and I will take it from there.  Thanks!
