The Horror in Burma
RANGOON, Burma (AP) — The United Nations says it will resume food aid flights to Burma on Saturday, and the governing military junta has agreed to allow a single U.S. cargo aircraft to bring in relief supplies for victims of a devastating cyclone, Bush administration officials said Friday.

As the U.N. forecasts heavy rains next week, aid to the areas hardest hit by Saturday's cyclone continue to be slowed as relief agencies negotiate with the Burmese government, which has been slow to approve visas and approve plans to distribute aid through the southern parts of the country.

Elizabeth Byrs, a spokeswoman in Geneva for the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, says the U.N. World Food Program decided to suspend flights Friday morning after two relief shipments were detained Thursday by Burma's government.

She said the shipments were detained because of a combination of custom-related problems and because foreign aid workers were not allowed to accompany the shipments and distribute them to the people.
