I have been researching my family history and was writing to see if
anyone had any information on Joaquim Fretias da Silva and his Family.
Joaquim was my grandma's uncle. He came over from Faial, Madeira on
the S.S. City of Paris in 1884 to Maui Hawaii (Wailuku area) with his
older sister Maria and Silvina, and his parents - Jose de Freitas da
Silva and Maria de Fretias do Nascimento. Joaquim married Virginia
Gomes Jardim who was born in Paia. They had several children- David,
Angelina, John, Anna da Natividade and Catherina. They might have had
a few other's but i am not sure. Joaquim and his family lived in
Spreckelsville, Maui and he worked as a Luna (Overseer) for the one of
the sugar cane companies.

I have found Joaquim and his family on the 1910, 1920 and 1930 census'
however have not been able to find him in the 1900 census. I have a
fair amount of pictures of him and his family, but would really like
to connect with relatives as well. It would be cool to find a marriage
record of Joaquim and Virginia. My uncle visited some of Joaquim's
family in Maui back in the 1970's, so it would be good to reconnect
with people and be able to share information.

Joaquim's father Jose de Freitas da Silva remarried after his first
wife died to Caroline Perry (Pereira) and later Caroline Langley, and
they moved to Sacramento, CA and had several children.

Anyways, I would greatly appreciate any information that anyone has
about Joaquim and his family.

Thanks,
David

Hi David.

I found the passport at the Madeira Arquivo
http://www.arquivo-madeira.org/homepage.php?lang=1
- see attached.

Also, the marriage certificate for Jose and Maria is
José de Freitas da Silva Maria de Freitas do Nascimento Faial 1875 5901 11

You can find that in the arquivo too. You can order a copy of their marriage certificate from them. I have ordered about 25 so for and they're fascinating.

good luck,

gina

David:
I have some members of my extended family who appear to have been born in
Sprecksville, Maui. I'm looking for any evidence of their existence (birth,
marriage, census, baptism, etc.) before 1900. If you come across any
resources, I'd sure appreciate hearing about them.

To everyone:

Families: Da Costa (Costa) from Azores (Abergeldie, 1883) and Do Espirito
Santo (Santos) from Madeira (Ravenscrag, 1879).

I'm looking for: Born at Spreckelsville, Maui, Emily/Amelia do Espirito
Santo (Santos) and her twin brother, Manuel, 1882/3, possibly two other
brothers, Charles, 1881, and August 1883/4. Parents: Jose do Espirito Santo
(Jose/Joe Santos, Sr.) and Virginia de Freitas Lopes.

In addition, I cannot find the marriages of: Joao (John Santos) do Espirito
Santos and Maria/Marie/Mary da Costa and, Manuel da Costa and Adelelaide do
Espirito Santo (Santos). A brother and sister who married a brother and
sister approximately 1895 +/-. I don't know if they were married on Maui or
Oahu. They all wound up on Oahu.

I have quite a bit of stuff from 1900 on, including pictures. I'm trying to
track them from landing in Hawaii to their births in Hawaii and/or their
marriages.

I can't find out what happened to the Da Costa parents either.

Thanks for any help.

Ronnie

I am a novice in working with family trees.  Anyone know a good site with a form that I can use.  I do not know how to organize the information that I have.  Soon as I have it organized, I will share it with the group and I know many members will find it interesting.

Thanks
Richard

Hello Richard
What you are asking is a big job. The first thing you need to do is get a genealogy program you can use on your computer. I have a Mac and the best choice is Reunion, which is an excellent software program for  what I need. If you have a PC or Windows machine, then you have a much broader choice. Some websites, such as : familysearch.org (the  LDS website) offers for free a program that can be used. I suggest you check it out.

In the meantime, I’m going to send you an invitation to join our  google group which is for researching all of Portugal, including the Continent of Portugal, Madera, the Açores and, on occasion, Brazil and a few other spots around the globe where Portuguese have settled over the years.  Anyway , just a suggestion. I’ll send the invitation for you just in case you would like to join.
Once you have the  software for a Genealogy Program, then I suggest you start imputing the data you have into the program.  Genealogy Research is a big job and can become very confusing without having a bunch of loose ends. Once the information is in the program, most genealogy programs have different forms of reports you can print out showing the family tree.

If you have further questions regarding what I have said, please feel free to ask any questions you may have.
Regards and God Bless

I'm sorry I don't have the time right now to help you look for your family however, I'm very ill right now and getting ready to go to bed. However, here are some links to searching in Hawaii. Hope they prove useful to you:

http://ulukau.org/gsdl2.7/cgi-bin/algene
http://hawaii.gov/dags/archives/about-us/genealogical-indexes-ulukau-website
http://ulukau.org/
http://www.islandroutes.com/
http://hawaii.uscity.net/Cemeteries/
http://www.daddezio.com/cemetery/junction/CJ-HI-NDX.html
http://viehweg.org/hhg/

The first link takes you  right into the on line Hawaii State website to an online search area. You can look up everything except, as I recall, birth records, on line The others are equally as good, including islandroutes it self, which is  excellent for those researching their relatives who moved to Hawaii from the Açores.

Hope this helps you.
God Bless

Hi Richard,
Welcome to the group!
The forms you need to start your search are a pedigree chart and a
family group sheet. I found a collection of free charts at this
website: http://www.your-familytree.com/freefamilytreecharts_freegenealogyforms.htm

First, fill out the pedigree as best you can. If you aren't sure
about information like dates either put a ? or ca. for circa. So if
you aren't sure about the name you put Maria? Pacheco. If it's the
date, put ca. 1882 (or whatever year) This way you'll know what
information is a guess and definitive.

Then move on to the family group sheets. Fill out one for every
couple in your pedigree chart.

From there you can decide if you'd like to purchase family tree
software to help you organize your data. I would recommend
downloading demos for each program so you can see which you prefer.

Once you got your data organized, please tell us about your family
tree. You might find a cousin here.

Thanks
Mel

Hi David,
Have you gotten help on the 1900 census yet? What name forms did you
find them under in the other census? You probably are aware that the
can be under Freitas or Silva. But they might also be under
variations like Frates, Fratas, Silvia, Sylva, Silver, and so on.

I might take a gander at the census if you can give info. on what the
family looked like in 1900. The 1900 census is particularly hard to
find families in because of the ways the names were messed up.

Thanks
Mel

Hi Mel,

I have looked at the 1900 Census and haven't really found anything
pertaining to Joaquim Freitas. I searched under Fretias, Silva and
Sylva so far. I am thinking that it is going to be quite difficult to
find him in 1900 because he was not married yet and was just a single
man at the time. I have not bee able to find many other relatives in
the 1900 Census either, except my grandma's siblings and parents.
Some of the other family members i would like to find in the 1900
Census include my great-grandmother's sister Silvina (Silva) Perry and
her family. She is the older sister of Joaquim F. Silva. She married
a John Perry, and they had several kids and eventually moved to
Sacramento, CA. I am not sure when they made the move to California
from Hawaii, so I have been trying to look in both Sacramento and
Hawaii in the 1900 census and haven't found anything. The other set
of family members i am looking for in the 1900 Census are Jose de
Freitas da Silva and his second wife Carolina Pereira/Perry. In 1900 i
know that they had several children at the time including Jose and
Manuel. They also moved to Sacramento, however I do not know exactly
when they did. I know by 1910 they were in Sacramento because i found
them in the 1910 census in Sacramento.

Anyways, I know that this is a lot of information and would appreciate
any information that you or anyone else might have about these family
members.

Thanks,
David

I believe I may have found Joaquim Freitas da Silva in the 1900
census. He is listed under Jose de Sylva (his father) in the Hana
District of Maui. It is difficult to tell whether this family was the
correct one, because many of the dates listed are inaccurate and names
misspelled, but i think the similarities of the family members listed
outweigh the other discrepancies. The other family members listed are
Carolina (Jose de Sylva's wife), Virginia (their daughter), and 3
other sons- Jose, Manuel and Frank. If anyone else has some other
input, it would be appreciated.

Thanks

I have found it very helpful to use the Soundex while searching the
1900 census. All sorts of different spellings can pop up even with
the simple name of Silva. I also have a greatgrandfather, Joseph
Silva, who came to Kaneohe, Oahu. I couldn't find him until I did a
Soundex search. Rootsweb has a program. You just type in the surname
and all possibilities of spellings come up. My Joseph Silva was
listed as Jofeph Silvers. Good luck.
