Subject: Invitation - DVD interoperability evaluation

Dear participant at the IHE North American Connectathon 2008,

IHE Radiology Technical Committee will oversee an evaluation of DVD hardware compatibility at the January Connectathon.

This is an invitation to all vendors at the connectathon to assist the committee with this evaluation.  Participation is optional.

Background

Today, many health IT vendors use or recommend combinations of DVD burners and media brands to ensure reliable quality of DVD media written. IHE Radiology, knowing about the fast development of the DVD market, wants to know if such recommendations are still necessary and, if yes, which combinations have proveto work well.  The results of the evaluation will help the Committee decide if this technology is reliable enough for creating an Integration Profile that allows exchanging of larger data sets using DVD media (similar to IHE RAD PDI profile).

Evaluation Details

Vendors may choose to participate in the evaluation as one or more of:
-- "Replicator" participant
-- "Authoring" participant
-- "Reader" participant

A description of the evaluation method is here: http://wiki.ihe.net/index.php?title=PDI_DVD_Preliminary-Evaluation.     As a participant, you do not "pass" or "fail".  You are just helping with a data gathering process.

How to sign up to participate

If you are interested in participating, ease respond by Dec. 10th, 2008 to Lynn Felhofer (felhofer@charter.netwith the following information:

  1. In your experience, which pairs of DVD burner device (brand, model) and media (brand, model produce reliably readable DVDs ?
  2. Is your company willing to be a "Replicator" or "Author" and create test CDs?  You will be provided with a test ISO image and asked to burn 15 tests DVDs for one or   multiple of your preferred burner and media combinations, and send them to the test manager by Jan. 7th, 2008
  3. Is your company  willing to be a "Reader" and bring any DVD reader to the Connectathon 2008  to read a number of  the test DVDs (low-level checksum test only).
If you have questions about this initiative, please send an individual note to me (ie not to the whole group).  Further communication about this evaluation will only be sent to those interested in participating.

Best regards,

Lynn Felhofer
