HEY GOOGLE! ARE YOU LISTENING! IS ANYBODY THERE? TURN OFF OR LET USERS
TOGGLE TEXT AUTO-COMPLETE IN SPREADSHEETS. I HAD TO STOP USING THE
PROGRAM TODAY ALTOGETHER. WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU? IT'S SUCH A DAMAGING
FUNCTION AND YOU ARE NOT LISTENING TO ALL OF THE COMPLAINTS. PLEASE,
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE TAKE CARE OF THAT PROBLEM IMMEDIATELY.

I love that google docs are free. I just wish there was a better way
to share our feedback. Especially when it can be so important to us
who have come to depend on Google docs to get through the days work.
The auto complete problem will send me home early today. I hope to be
able to work tomorrow.

We found a small solution for now... At the first of typing put in
a . or ? something weird then type your reg. stuff then enter to save
it. THEN go back and delete the . or ? or something weird you put in
and then enter again it will not auto fill now. Hope Google come up
with a fix

But that is quite a bit of extra work, not least in remembering you
have to do it!
Google: as mkmk so clearly expresses it - please listen to your users
and allow us to turn off auto-complete (and the Sort bar for good
measure in my book).

Thank you for hearing the pleas of the Google Docs spreadsheet users.
Turning Auto-complete off may bring a sigh of relief to many.
However... if just created a spreadsheet, that - by lack of a drop-
down list selection - makes use of the Auto-complete feature. I.e. I
have a hidden number of rows with names, and the user just has to type
in the first letter(s) of a name to get the right predefined name in
the cell. Because Auto-complete has been turned off this spreadsheet
is now broken...
I don't ask to bluntly turn Auto-complete on again - far from that -
but please give me an alternative, e.g by allowing a drop-down list or
- which has been asked - let me, the user, decide if I want to use
Auto-complete in a certain column.

<<or - which has been asked - let me, the user, decide if I want to
use Auto-complete in a certain column. >> Yes, please - it was
actually useful in certain (specialised) circumstances. A toggle
switch would be nice - or a per-column setting as Ahab suggests.

Hi all,
As Chandler said, we did turn off Auto-complete - but only
temporarily.
Our original intention was to fix the feature according to your
feedback, but it became clear that the feedback and opinions were so
varied (and passionate ;) on this feature that we should take a more
immediate step to stop negatively impacting your work while trying to
positively impact it... so it's off for now.
It does seem that an option is the best way to go if we can't
otherwise find a way to please most people with a feature the "just
works"... The question on that path is - would that option be best
placed per user? per spreadsheet? per column? a combination of these?
It seems the vote from this crowd of advanced users that per
spreadsheet and column is the right combination.
Also, it seems that if we had the drop-down list of prior entries
appear BELOW the cell being edited, it would not get in the way for
people who don't want it... it would take an arrow key down (or mouse
click) to select a prior entry. In that case, an option might not be
necessary.
Ahab's point about needing a dropdown list of valid entries is heard
as a separate feature - so we won't try to make this feature cover
that case (sorry where the turn off of auto-complete ruined that
creative solution)

Such was suggested early on, almost as soon as when the input auto-
complete and the function auto-complete were released. IMHO the
function auto-complete interface is superior to the input auto-
complete (sorry Marin...).
Please note that the selection by cursor keys from the function auto-
complete is not supported (at least not in IE), so I always had to
resort to using the mouse for selection (at least those times I would
select a function from the - incomplete, and sometimes containing
incorrect parameters - presented list) [yes I know, I'm always
nagging, and nagging...;]

Personally I would find the extra step of having to mouse or key down
into a list of previously entered options too much hassle - for me the
autocomplete as I typed was wonderful in certain circumstances
(namely, filling in place names or species names in my wildlife
lists). I would vote for by column (on for places and species names,
off for date and grid reference and free-text note columns in that
particular spreadsheet).

The drawback of the input autocomplete would be - IMHO - that always
the first available match would be presented. So you would have to go
on typing until a different match was available. This would bring
about a greater chance that the user would use the first presented
match - which was a real source for errors when inputting numbers but
which would also come into play with similar looking strings (you
would be entering a text, but also have to cross-check if the
presented autocomplete was the correct one, and correct this when your
fingers made the wrong choice). Being able to select from a popup list
(like with the function auto-complete), will at least present you with
all partial matches, which may lead to less errors in the long run.

If I could step into the battle of wills here! I would like to beg
for the reintroduction of the autocomplete function!! I have been
maintaining a procedural log for several years now (only lately on
Google Docs) and the autocomplete function is a MAJOR timesaver when
data is entered in 'live'. A major reason for using Google Docs has
been lost in my opinion....
I believe we should have the technology to make this feature available
to those that need it, either by person or collumn. Either is fine
for me... But can we please have it turned back on ASAP in some form
as my ability to maintain my log in a timely manner is being
compromised. Surely 'they' can trial run one form of optional
autocomplete or other until 'they' find the right one - but at least
then it would be available to those that need it in the interim!!

The pull down sounds like a great option to me. That way there is
less of a chance of accidentally entering the wrong information, which
would take up more time in the long run.

Sorry If I do this wrong I just wanted to post on the issue. I NEED
the auto-complete option back. I work in a sheet and have to enter a
lot of the same information over and over again. This is killing me
not having it. (again worry if I replied to the wrong place)

You guys really need to create an option for the user if they want to
use auto-complete or not. I read enough rants about how auto-complete
was not helpful. Well, I am one of those individuals who found auto-
complete really helpful. Which is why I ended up using the Google
spreadsheet in the first place. I work in an area where names and
dates are repeated and auto-complete was an amazing and time-saving
feature. Again, an option for the user might be helpful. In other
words, I WANT IT BACK! It's been driving me a little crazy that it has
been turned off.

I absolutely used this feature, even for dates. (I have a column of
dates, with a special cell in the same column meant for entering one
of the dates found in the column.) However, there WERE times when I
wished it could be turned off.
How difficult would it be to just make this a Spreadsheet Setting so
that this can be configured on a sheet-by-sheet basis, and it could
default to OFF. There is already a Spreadsheet Settings area and it
is so bare bones... with only the Locale and the Time Zone. Let's add
more there instead of just arbitrarily turning off features because a
particular group got loud enough.

1) Allow auto-complete to be a per-column setting...
...or...
2) Allow auto-complete to be a per-spreadsheet setting...
...or...
3) Allow auto-complete to be a per-cell setting, treated the same as a
"format" such as text color, font, font style, background color,
border, etc... The setting can be OFF... ON (defaulting to everything
in that column)... or ON, tied to a specific range. This could allow
users to define which set of data the auto-complete should actually be
based on, in circumstances where someone might want auto-complete to
be based on a different column... or, instead, by a row... or perhaps
data from a different sheet.

@3 This is a bit of a confusing suggestion. I think of Auto-complete
as an input feature. So setting it like a format would allow/disallow
a cell to have auto-complete working when the user inputs stuff.
Quite a different setting would be if a cell's contents should be used
for the auto-complete (typically one would like headers to be excluded
from the autocomplete data).
So your suggestion is actually two suggestions... :)

Some of used the autocomplete. Some of us found the autocomplete
incredibly helpful. Can't you bring it back for those of us who used
it? Or at least make it an option??
