OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Oct. 28, 2007) - Winds and rain did not
stop over 10,000 Canadians of Greek descent to travel to the wet
grounds of Parliament Hill to deliver a stern message to the Harper
government - rescind the FYROM recognition decision.
"We consider Mr. Harper's decision an insult of our cultural and
historical identity. We demand that Mr. Harper rescind his
government's decision to recognize FYROM as "Republic of Macedonia"
said Costas Menegakis, President, Greek Community of Toronto.
The Canadians came from all walks of life and cities like London,
Toronto, Montreal and Laval. They travel to Ottawa in over 100 buses
and hundreds of private cars to personally tell Prime Minister Harper
that his government's decision regarding the recognition of FYROM
under its so called "constitutional name" ignores their sensitivities
of cultural identity.
"The actions of the Mr. Harper government are unhistorical and have
set a dangerous precedent for all civilizations and we demand that for
the sake of historical truth the government rescinds its decision",
said Demetrius Manolakos, President, Canadian Hellenic Congress.
"Canadians of Greek descent will not forget Mr. Harper's decision and
we will remind him at every opportunity until the decision is
rescinded."
The protest is continued. Today, Sunday, October 28th, 2007 at 1:00 pm
at the heart of GreekTown on the Danforth, Canadians of Greek descent
commemorates the 67th Anniversary of "OXI Day". Greece, the birthplace
of democracy said "OXI" (NO) to fascism and defended its birthright,
despite overwhelming and unfavourable odds. The result of this stern
message was powerful, and ignited unprecedented grass-roots resistance
against the forces of fascism.
Like our forefathers today, we Canadians of Greek descent say "NO" to
Mr. Harper for his unwanted and insulting decision to recognize FYROM
under its so called "constitutional name".
