Greek Art and Culture: Origins and Influences

A conference at the University of Haifa, 20-21 May 2007

The Mediterranean basin was in many aspects the cradle of modern civilization.
Western philosophy and the arts, and western canons of beauty were created
here. This is also the place where the Greek arts encountered other cultures
thus creating new forms, meanings and aesthetic notions.
The art and architecture of ancient Greece have influenced Western art through
the ages. Its influence is reflected in various aspects of Jewish, Early
Christian and Medieval art as well as the arts of the Modern era. Byzantine art
played an important role in the formation of world art too, and is especially
important in the understanding of certain trends during the late 19th and 20th
century art. Also Modern and Contemporary Greece has a significant place in
cultural and artistic developments.
The main objective of the conference is to further explore major aspects of
Greek art and the relationship between Greek art and the arts of other
cultures.
Scholars are accordingly invited to contribute papers on the following issues:
• Ancient Greek art and its influences
• Modern and Contemporary Hellenic art and its roots
• Religious art in Modern Greece
• From Byzantium to Moderna
• Greek Mythology and Folklore in the visual arts through the centuries
• The Human Body as a Classical concept

The title and a brief abstract (no more than 250 words) should be sent before
November 1st to the following addresses:

Dr. Jenny Horowitz: horo...@research.haifa.ac.il
Dr. Sonia Klinger: kli...@research.haifa.ac.il
Dr. Emma Maayan-Fanar: mad...@zahav.net.il
