I assume these are still alive, Donald. If so, try to rear them, as I think the adults might be easier to ID than the larvae.
If you are coming to Strathpeffer on Saturday, why not bring them along? Someone there may have some ideas.

caterpillers in owl pellets

Dissecting barn owl pellets at school yesterday we extracted some tiny
caterpillars [about 7mm, white with brown heads] along with the bones
of voles. I presume they are of a moth, with eggs layed on the pellet
whilst on the ground. Anyone familiar witht the species, might it be a
species of clothes moth?

We have some here already and I saw some as early as 26 September flying overhead!

I was also amazed yesterday to see some sparrows investigating the nest box!! But it is unseasonably warm.

Not as far as I know, Martin. The only slime-mould person I know in the area is Dave Genney (SNH). If you have a picture you could try posting it on one of the wildlife forums, or to Dave direct. I will give you his address off-forum if you want it.
I saw a bright red one earlier in the year at Blackmuir Wood, but Dave was on holiday at the time and could not check it microscopically.

Yes interesting sighting; I must have completely overlooked this wee
micro moth during my recent walks in the area. I will open my eyes
again.

PS. Anyone know which species of water boatman this is [attached] -
found on heather beside a dubh-lochan near Kinlochbervie this month.

Diamond-back Moths

Think I can beat you all so far; 15 painted ladies on two clumps of
flowering chives in our garden, arrived quite suddenly on Saturday.
Green veined white, white tailed bumble bees, common carder bees, wasps
and an interesting hover fly sp all also on these amazing chives. Sadly
no great yellow bumblebees yet. Interestingly the painted ladies often
