Yesterday I saw a newt and I wasn't inebriated!
It was in march behind Loch Kinellan near Strathpeffer, on the track
which had quite a bit of traffic (NH 46787 57401).  As the beast
already had an injury to its right hind leg we helped it off the road
into a ditch with lots of vegetation in the hopes it could return to
its winter slumbers.
I have put a pic called Christmas Newt in the files.

It is palmate but can you tell the sex at this time of year?

David O'B & I would be very interested in other records of winter
newts.
