Swallows everywhere on the Tarbatness peninsula yesterday (23rd) which
I think is early. I'm used to a few from mid-April but they don't
usually turn up in numbers until the very end of April or the first
few days of May.
Jimmy I checked Shandwick yesterday. Not as big an area of primrose
as previous years and no beefly despite good flying conditions (16°C
calm, sunny).

I had Willow Warbler on 10 April, and Swallows on 11 April. Both are all over the place now (like on Skye in the past 2 days). Also Common Sandpiper, Greenshank and Whimbrel (last 2 probably passing through).
What worries me a bit is the lack of Cuckoo - I have been a lot on the west in the past couple of weeks and heard not a single one. Are the Cuckoo worries in the media recently justified, or am I being impatient?

PS - Another new dot for G H'streak at the Moll on Skye yesterday. The day before I found the first Lasius flavus for Skye (Talisker) and the second L. niger (Loch Eynort).
I was in Kinlochbervie, Sutherland on 14th April and ringed two Willow Warblers in the parents' garden. They were in every piece of woodland near Scourie in good numbers, too. There were Wheatears everywhere around there at that time and all over Faraid Head. A White Wagtail was on Balnakiel beach and Sand Martins were over the Dionard near the Kyle of Durness.
There were still a lot of wintering birds, too, with 7 whoopers, 200 pink-feet, 2 pintail, 20 wigeon, lots of redwing...etc still on Faraid Head.

Plenty of house martins around Redcastle with over 20 nests being
constructed. Have also started seeing swifts in the area over the last
few days with one screaming over the house yesterday.
Found a willow warblers nest at Crannach Field Centre with eggs. If
anyone is interested in ringing chicks later on get in touch.

I had 7+ painted ladies at Tarbatness yesterday but none at Dornoch on
29th or Loch fleet on 30th when doing the transects. 1 painted lady
at Nigg this morning (1st June)
Lots of house martins in this area including a group at Tarbatness
nesting at the base of the light. I wounder if they are the highest
nesting house martins in the country.
Swifts have been around Tain in good numbers since 21st May.
Regards to all
David
Think I can beat you all so far; 15 painted ladies on two clumps of
flowering chives in our garden, arrived quite suddenly on Saturday.
Green veined white, white tailed bumble bees, common carder bees, wasps
and an interesting hover fly sp all also on these amazing chives. Sadly
no great yellow bumblebees yet. Interestingly the painted ladies often
settle on the bare earth too, might be for extra warmth although Durness
is in the 20C range.
