That's right, love it or hate it, Barney's Beanery is an LA
institution. Opened on Santa Monica Boulevard in 1927, it was just a
chili joint on Route 66, which became a roadhouse to the stars - and
beatniks, movie producers, actors, and rockers.
Despite its sometimes Bohemian clientele, Barney's was, for many years,
openly hostile towards its gay and lesbian customers.
For the opening salvo of this year's Pride (with which, for the record,
we guerrilla gays are not affiliated), we're going to take over one of
West Hollywood's last bastions of in-your-face heterosexuality!
According to an interview in the LA Times earlier this year, the new
management is cool with the gays; he even invited some of the
protesters in from the old days to make peace - but says GLBTQ folks
hardly ever stop in. Just wait til tomorrow night!
Here's a few things to keep in mind:
Arrive between 10:15 and 10:30. We want to make a quick, visual
impact, and that will work best if we can infiltrate quickly. Also,
you wanna be there to see it, yeah?
Wear a shirt that is a solid color of the rainbow or a black armband.
No worries if you can't (or don't want to), but this will make it
easier to meet and mingle, without being totally obvious. (Ok, the
armband would be a little obvious.) We'll have extra armbands if you
forget - just ask anyone with an armband, and they should be able to
point you to someone with extras.
Bring a few friends. The more the merrier. We're hoping to break the
mold as much as possible, and see some folks who you might not see in
an average gay bar. Bring your bear friends, your drag queen friends,
your twink friends, your dirty-old-man friends, your partnered friends,
your bewildered roommate, your lesbian friends, your curious clean-cut
boy-next-door friends.

Take some pictures. With your cameraphone, your digital camera,
Polaroid, whatever. Act like a revolutionary tourist. Post 'em to our
Flickr photo pool (http://flickr.com/groups/ggbla/), where so we can
all see 'em and talk about em.
Above all, tip your servers. We've heard again and again from our
comrades in other guerrilla gay outposts that the number one way to
insure a smooth ride at a bar invasion is to take care of the bar
staff. As in life, take care of your bartender, and the rest will take
care of itself.
