Anyone have a good method of cleaning oxidation etc from pipe stems?

Here's a method I've seen recently.
Use Soft Scrub cleanser w/o clorox. With the stem removed from the pipe
add a bit of Soft Scrub and rub it with a soft cloth. Add more as you
need to in order to get all the stuff off. Use a clean cloth to polish
it up.
I've also used toothpaste in a similar fashion.
