June 22, 2009 Planning Committee report;
The 6th International Dialog will be held November 18-21 2009 in Manila Philippines.  A web page will be set up at www.motherearth.ph  for logistical and programmatic information and registration.  Meeting rooms are near a nice inexpensive hostel for convenience.  There are many Hotels in the area.
On Wednesday afternoon the Zero Waste International Alliance will meet and deal with organization issues.  For the interim the committee has asked Laura Anthony to act as our network coordinator and executive director.  She has been maintaining the website (www.zwia.org) and will be needed to handle organizational and networking issues.  In the evening there will be a hosted reception.  We will try for the Palace.
On Thursday; we will have regional reports starting with the Philippines and then Asia and Australia and New Zealand (We need reports and speakers). We would like a high power luncheon speaker like Annie Leonard.
Rick will recruit speakers from the Americas, Maxine will work on Europe and we still need some volunteers to help us get speaker and reports from Africa, Asia and India.  Thursday evening could be a culture event (dinner and a program).
On Friday; we want to focus on world climate change (there is an international ghg meeting in Copenhagen in December) and how zero waste best practices can help reduce ghg’s.  Issues to be discussed on Friday include: EPR, Waste pickers, transforming Landfills into resource recovery parks, problems with burners and nukes, renewable energy sources and stimulus plans (carbon caps).
All ZWIA networkers (listserv members) are requested to send representative to provide the regional reports and participate in Friday’s discussion topic issues
On Saturday our host will provide tours of zero waste programs in the region.

Apologies for Cross-Postings

Rick and Sonia,

Thanks for your leadership in organizing another Zero Waste International Dialog!

I really like the emphasis of the 2nd day on Climate Change, and specifically, organizing for the next UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen Dec 7-18, 2009 (http://en.cop15.dk/ ).

Who are key contacts at environmental groups that will be attending Copenhagen?  Does anyone in this network know who we should reach out to for more information on this and to inform them of Zero Waste issues?  Does anyone have recommendations for speakers for Manila that could help guide the ZWIA network to play a part in getting Zero Waste on the table in Copenhagen?

[apologies for cross-posts]

Hi Gary and all,

As you know, GAIA has taken an active role in trying to put Zero Waste
on the table for Copenhagen. I will admit, it has been an uphill battle.
First, most people working on climate do not view waste as a major issue
-- particularly compared to burning of fossil fuels, deforestation, the
rapid industrialization of China and India, etc. Second, the Copenhagen
process has been dominated by big business interests, which -- to the
extent that they look at waste at all -- are interested in building
incinerators and landfill gas systems. But we have been pushing hard to
let national negotiators, NGO allies, and the press know that these are
not solutions (for the climate or anything else) and that ZW is indeed a
solution.

In this, we have recently been joined by a number of wastepicker
organizations. Wastepickers -- those who make a living in the informal
sector by removing recyclable materials from the waste stream -- are
getting increasingly organized in many parts of the world. They are also
seeing their livelihoods negatively impacted by the incinerators and
controlled landfills that are now being subsidized with climate funds.
So we had a great experience at the most recent treaty meetings, in
Bonn, where wastepicker representatives were able to send a strong
message about the link between waste, climate, and livelihoods. You can
see our press conference here:

And more materials about this campaign here:

We are planning on attending the Bangkok intersessional meeting as well
as the Copenhagen meeting in December; anyone interested in working on
waste and climate issues, please do contact me (offlist please, so as
not to flood the various lists) and let us coordinate!

all the best,

Neil
