Wie bitte? Le chiedo scusa? Pardon!? Cardota 'ch bardynu? I beg your pardon?
What gives? You're not the latest GWHG victim to be stolen by Google or something, are you?
> You've all been great!
As for that, I'm not so sure. I for one am terribly cantankerous and grouchy in the morning before I have my first coffee, something which seriously affects my overall greatness...

Don't you swear at me ;-)
To be fair, I only speak three of those, and one of these only haltingly with a terrible accent; so I'm really only a Bilingual who can also get by in French, I guess. I had to look the Welsh & the Italian up; but whatever the case may be, I am most DEFINITELY not an American ;-)
However... no matter which language you put it in, I'm still concerned that JLH suddenly seems to have said his farewells rather suddenly and unceremoniously...
I know the Cardinal asked the question:
> That said, Google is increasingly pointing webmasters this > direction and I wonder (again) what would happen if the big time > regulars here were to walk away?
Sorry to say I didn't recognise the Welsh translation, even though I can see the Principality on a clear day!
I'm very new here but am conscious of what a huge gap has been left by John Mu's departure, and another departure by a senior poster would hit the Group hard - I simply didn't know what to make of JLH's enigmatic post. If the most authoritative posters are being recruited then best of luck to them, and endless congratulations, but it would a great loss to the Group.

Agreed
I shot John a mail, and for the moment I doubt he's coming back (I'm not speaking for JLH in any capacity). TBH I'm really beginning to know how he feels.

Yup, I sent him an email on Sunday and he seemed pretty disillusioned with the place in his reply.

Well... I've made the crack about being abandoned behind enemy lines in jest before now, but it's certainly beginning to feel like that in here at times.
Just read your interview, and before I saw that, I had drafted a long followup note to our recent comments-exchange, I think it's better for me to scrap that and be concise.
I've really appreciated having you on the forum here, and it's clear I'm not alone. I'm sad at how you perceive our interests and direction as an organization, but optimistic that we'll win you back not through our words but our actions. I will, however, briefly point to some words from my colleague Susan: http://twopieceset.blogspot.com/2007/09/two-weeks-in-europe.html
She took a moment to highlight a recent trip she and I took to our European headquarters in Dublin. We went so we could more closely brainstorm with our international search quality peers there to spread the communications love in ultimately dozens of languages. Susan and I and other search quality folks go to conferences a few times a year, yes, but by far are spending more of our time trying to make webmaster communications scalable internationally.
But I digress... and I guess I'm not very good at being concise. This isn't about us, it's about you. And you, JLH, are welcome back anytime. Take care, and thanks for all of your contributions.
I just read your faq re groups, webcrawling, etc. I looked but did not see a way to contact you there but a link to other posts by you. So I selected one (below) and am replying to it to reach you.
It appears to me that boogle searches of the groups and web indicae you are the Googel employee most responsible for Google's indexing new groups. Granted that when I findly get to the faq it reads as tho it is just about you web site crawling and web page indexing and that that is separate from newgroup type crawling / indexing.
If you are not the right person then please tell me who is and furnish their email address. Or forward the following question to them (or answer it yourself if you are the right person).
I made several entries into a microsoft winME general discussion newsgroup today. Several times thereafter, I used your groups search engine to search for it but I never found it. Do you crawl newsgroups? How often do you crawl microsoft.public newsgroups? Are any Microsoft.public newsgroups NOT crawled? If so, why?
Thank you for your consideration. Bob Cooper Oceanside, CA
