Subject: Successfully verified site; can html file be removed?
Having successfully verified a site by uploading the html file, can it
then be removed? Need it remain... if so, for how long.

My boss thinks it should stay, I think it can be removed once
ownership is varified... neither of us 100% sure.

As a matter of good house keeping I'd like to remove unnecessary files
from the server.

Please advise! Thanks,

Michael

Michael

It needs to stay - it will be checked occasionally.

This "unnecessary" file an be blank.  If you don't even want it to
appear in the directory, why not just use the metatag method of
verification?

How do you know it is checked occasionally if google bot hits it only
once?

Hi Michael,

Robbo is correct in responding that the verification file should be
left in place since the verification service will periodically check
for it. It does this to confirm that the account associated with the
verification file should still have access to the site's Webmaster
Tools data.

To avoid having an extra file in my root directory, I simply slipped a
rule into my .htaccess file to map the filename to robots.txt.  Google
only does a head request to verify the file exists, ISTR.
