I've had a request marked "pending" for over 60 hours now; how long
does a request usually take to be actioned?

I'm removing a webpage which returns a valid 404 in the headers.

Hi Dan
These removals usually take 3-5 business days to get processed. If
you're returning a 404 result code then you should be fine. We have
some more details about this process at
http://google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?answer=61062

Hope it helps!

Thanks John. Don't know how I missed that - usually I'm good at
reading docs!

Well, I removed a page from my site, it returns a 404 error. I
submitted a remove request and it was denied. What do I have to do?

Is it also disallowed in robots.txt? Then take it out of robots.txt
and request removal again.

Hi John

Need your guidance PLEASE.

The page was giving a 404 error and we have request the removal of
this page from Google search. The request status say REMOVED.

1) What shall we expect as a result of the above:

a) the relevant page will not appear on GOOGLE search any more <OR>
b) the page and title will appear, but the CACHE will be cleared

2) HOW long does it take for the REMOVED action to take effect on
Google search.

Please HELP and be an angel, John

Thanks ahed

Hi PM
If a URL is marked as "removed" then it should not be shown in web-
searches on Google for the next 90 days. In general, if a URL is no
longer on your website, it will probably not be reincluded after those
90 days -- if it is, you can just request a removal again. The 90-day
limit is to help make sure that you do not accidentally remove content
from the search results permanently.

Hope it helps!
John

Hi John,

Thanks a ton - YOU ARE THE BEST GUY on the blog in terms of attitude
and responsiveness. I am sure all the blog users appreciate that.

Yes, the URL is marked REMOVED. I got that notification from Google on
Jan 19th, however I just did a search and the URL,cache and the
snippet still appears.

Could you please guide me why the REMOVED has not taken effect yet?

I can you send you the URL offline if you are kind enough to lok into
it.

You are a huge credit to the Gblog, John

Cheers

Is it the same url right down to the minutest detail like www or non-
www, query string paramaters all the same and in the same order?

Is the url giving a true 404? Test it with http://oyoy.eu/page/headers/
or http://web-sniffer.net .

Also make sure it is not also blocked in robots.txt .

Dear Webado

Thanks for the quick response here.

Yes the URL yielding a true 404 and not blocked in robots.txt.

Not sure how long it takes to (once we get the REMOVED note from
Google to ACTUALLY removing this URL from the G search results)?

Cheers,
PM

I've done a longish post on URL termination recently, here is the
piece about the former 6 months and now 90 days limit:

Thanks Sebastain - that was a helpful note.

Would any one know - how soon it takes to (once we get the REMOVED
note from
Google to ACTUALLY removing this URL from the G search results)?

Is that instantaneous, the moment we get the REMOVED notice the URL is
removed from Google or does it take a few days to take effect.

My question is HOW SOON and not FOR HOW LONG

Thanks ahead

Hi John

Could you clarify the "probably" in your post ? If the page has been
removed from Google's index and no longer appears on the site when you
try to crawl it again, how could it be reincluded ?

Thanks

John

The removal request must be distributed to all data centers around the
globe. I fear that there's no answer to your question. The throughput
John mentioned should be understood as "within 3-5 business days all
of Google's data centers will no longer show the removed URL on their
SERPs".

I have always gotten prompt and effective response/guidance from John
Mu and it is greatly appreciated.

It is people like JohnMu who makes Google #1.

I just hope the Google processes for page removal are made simpler and
more effective, so that the current Google fans remain fans for
ever :)
