I read through many of the posts on this topic already and most of
them were somewhat dated. I chose Microsoft Office Live Small
Business to host my site because it was free and very easy to register
my domain and create my website. I recently took a free course on
hp.com on Search Engine Optimization and I'm trying to make some
improvements on my site so that I will do better in SE rankings, hence
the desire to be able to use the Google webmaster tools.
Like all the other folks that have posted, I have run into the issue
of not being able to add a meta tag or the html file in the root
directory so I haven't been able to verify ownership of my site.
Microsoft has changed the packaging/pricing of the tiers of Office
Live Small Business and while I have only the base (free) service, I
can upload documents into a repository on my site. I successfully
created the .html file that Google specified, but when I uploaded it
to the site, it is placed in a subdirectory, not the root. The
location is:
It would be great if Google would considering tweaking the
verification process so that it would look in either the root or /
documents for the html file. It would help a lot of small business
owners take advantage of the google tools.

Jonathan,
Thanks so much for the link! I had done a search of the group but
hadn't found that thread. I used the technique on the website and was
able to get my site (www.paradiselakescondo.net) verified. I created
a Sitemap tonight and submitted it as well as doing some keyword
optimization so we will see what kind of effect that it has on my page
ranking.

You need a sitemap that resides in the root directory to submit to
Google, Yahoo and Live Webmaster Tools. There's a sitemap generator
product that works with Office Live for that:
