I have tried several different sitemap generators, yet every single time i submit my siteamap, i recieve errors. I am new to creating sitemaps so i would truly appreciate any help.

Sitemaps can created to server two different purposes.
Purpose 1 is a web page that is created for users visiting your site. It provides a type of "Table of Contents" that the user can use to quickly see what pages\topics are available on your site usually by making these clickable links for easy navigation.
This can be in HTML or XHTML webpage formats and this is the type that is at the link you provided in your post.
The other kind of sitemap is one which you submit to search engines to supply them with a list of the URLs or webpage URI's and maybe some other information. These pages typically conform to certain standards and have an XML format and file extension. See sitemaps.org for more info.
There are txt versions that some SE's accept also but I don't want to confuse the issue.
Anyway, This is Not what you have.
There should be an option for the type in the generator you are using.
Hope that clears up any confusion.

In general, I would look at the sitemap as if it was a book index or table of contents. Usually you will start looking for something in the book by going thru this first page. You will find it easy, quick and more convinient than to go thru the whole book.
As our friend, abracadabra, is stating - you're looking at 2 types of sitemaps: 1. For humans - web visitors provided with a "HTML"-ish version of sitemap 2. Non humans (i.e. search engines) - provided with more detailed and descriptive version of sitemap in XML format (it's not very readable).

I also have been having trouble with my xml sitemap. usually google will accept it and then about 2 days later say it is not in a supported format. i have tried sitemaps from many places, but the one i find easiest to use is the one from www.auditmypc.com. i have once again submitted it and i am once again getting the 'unsupported format' error. i am so frustrated i am just not worrying about it. maybe someday it will accept it. its location is www.doggypanache.com/sitemap.xml. i found a site on her about verification of sitemap and got a msg that my site name was not in it, but i have no idea how to fix the sitemap if that is indeed the case. the text on the message stating that did not match any text i can find on my sitemap. i am a newbie obviously and really frustrated right about now. thanks.

No worries and no frustrations - we got you covered! :)
Looks like your sitemap.xml is indeed an XML file, however it's not complatible with a "Google" standard (it doesn't have a reference to xmlns="http://www.sitemaps.org/schemas/sitemap/0.9" xmlns:xsi="http:// www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance at the begining of the file). Looks like, this AuditmyPC is a professional Company, but at the same time they are not generating the 'right" sitemap.xml.

i have tried the http://www.xml-sitemaps.com site many times, but it will only go up to 500 pages. if i only do level 1 pages, i am okay, but i can't find out how to limit the depth of the sitemap and so it does everything including all my product pages, and then it's way over 500 and just stops when it reaches that point. i have had good luck with the auditmypc one until the last 2 weeks. my problem with g- crawler is that i have to download a program and i usually do my sitemap from work and i can't download anything. i'm between a rock and a hard place. i have dial up at home (i know...) but i will try the gcrawler one from home and see if i can stay connected long enough. thanks

I think that 500 pages sitemap as a start, is just fine. A free version of sitemap generator by xml-sitemaps.com is limited to 500 pages - you should also consider a non FREE version.
BTW - very impressed with your web site "contenting" skills. :-)

thanks walkair but i am not sure what you mean by "contenting skills". anyway, i am at my wits end.
I am totally frustrated with trying to create a sitemap. I don't understand this at all. For the past few months I have been able to do so using Auditmypc and uploading it with Filezilla. However, I have not had any luck at all using any of the following:
AUDITMYPC: Apparently this sitemap has multiple code problems
SITEMAPDOC: This will only generate up to 500 pages and as I am unable to specific depth, it stops partway through my site as it is including all my product pages (I have over 1200 products).
GCRAWLER: I finally figured out how to use the program and got a sitemap generated with 2011 pages (is there a way to only do top level pages???). when I tried to upload it to my server I kept getting error message. Last night I uploaded it from work (where I have a satellite connection) using filezilla with apparent success.
However, when checking it this morning I am still getting an error, that it is in an unsupported format. When I try to click on it to see it, I get the following message: "The XML page cannot be displayed Cannot view XML input using XSL style sheet. Please correct the error and then click the Refresh button, or try again later. The system cannot locate the object specified. "
I am so disgusted with all this I can't tell you. I have actually doubled my blood pressure medication in the last 3 days since I started this. Can someone PLEASE tell me what to do next?

I've not found this to be the case. I'm definitely a newbie, but I've been using AUDITMYPC for a while now with no issues. I created a new sitemap and just submitted it within the last week with no error messages. I think something else is causing the error. There's something about coding/decoding depending on how you load the file.

If it finds broken links you have to fix them. If there are any redirections you have to fix thsoe too and use the final destination in your navigation.

That must be a aprticularly nasty form of session id or god knows what. Also links like those starting with /gadgettablet/logo.img?picture.image.mask.tolerance=..... are apparently volatile and meaningless unless you are on the site and navigate it. They all should be disallowed in robots.txt. I woudl add these restrictions to robtos.txt rigth away:

so should i try to remove all the redirects? i foolishly changed some url names and was told (by stores online) to do redirects for all the pages google does not find.
all these coding issues is one reason people like me should not be allowed to have websites!
re the comment about auditmypc, yes, it was working great a while ago. maybe the redirects are part of the problem. i will start with fixing those.
