I have been reading and trying to absorb everything I have been told
here, even the stuff from some of your gruffer posters.
Links seems to be an issue according to some here. My question is:
What is the correct protocol for getting backlinks? My confusion
is.....As a new website I have been told that the way G finds you is
through links leading to your site. So here is what seems like the
Catch-22: How does G find you when you are new if you have no
backlinks, and if you have no backlinks, you can't move up in the
search process for anyone to find you, in order to give you "natural"
backlinks.
Doing what I thought I was supposted to, I went out and blogged about
how we ended up being store/website owners, and wrote articles about
our store and about our subject matter. I thought these were all good
content and relavent. These had in them links to my website. That is
what I thought I was supposed to do when you get told, "Go out and get
backlinks".
>I have been reading and trying to absorb everything I have been told

Ha, I hope I am not one of them:) Why not go out and blog about your
site and get some good back links as well? If you are not paying for
this, creating multiple sites to promote your own (this is important
and I hope that's not what you mean) or trying to manipulate the
search engines than this can be an effective way to promote your site.
There is nothing wrong with getting "buzz" about your site. Make sure
it is related to your industry. Compelling content on your site will
eventually attract visitors to link back to it also. It takes time and
hard work.

Your sight looks to be very narrow at this point: not the whole world
is Google, and not Google the only source from people to find a site.
If you step out from this circle then it's not Catch-22. First people
have to know and find your site, find it valuable and link to it. This
is what can be later recognized by Google.
P.s.: Just to help the technical side (as bots are crawling the web
through links) you may find the very few relevant (to your site)
directories and submit your site- so that it's "available " for bots.
But of course cannot expect that Google should count these as
independent, third party, "I like your site/one of your pages is
important for my users"-type votes that help rankings.

So blogging doesn't mean create your own blog? Do I then comment on
other peoples blogs about my relavent subject/website, leaving a link
to my site?
Where do articles that you might write on say ezinearticles.com? Are
those wrong?
What about website like here, where you can leave your URL in your
profile? Is that to be avoided?
What about URL as part of signature?

So far in a whole 8 months, G is the only one to pick it up. Without
Google in all this time I would NOT have been found except for a few
correctly placed backlinks. I have tried to do all that is recommended
by the SE, I get an occasional visitor from Yahoo, or MSN, but by no
means enough to make a living off of.
I want to be found in other ways, I hate feeling at the mercy of
GOOOOOGLE. This sucks! Right now I read post after post of people who
have been doing this for years and making a living and all of a sudden
because they hace disappeared in Google searches they fear going
bellyup.
I have worked my butt off for 8 months trying to do this right and
WHAM, now I am sitting on this massive amount of stock because I
finally made it to page ! and now I am gone, no sales, nada.
Is it back links, is it spam, is it owning parked domains? If it is
Goggle certainly said nothing.
Believe me, if I can figure out how to get out of Googles box and
still have people find me, I will. But I am at a loss and I am clearly
not alone.
BB, can you tell me, if you have a website where people find you other
than Google and natural links
BB also said:

I have done that, and there really are very few relavent sites.

Create your own blog which includes links to your site. Comments on
other blogs are most often "nofollowed" in the source code meaning
they aren't really back links.
> Where do articles that you might write on say ezinearticles.com? Are
> those wrong?
View the source code and "do a find" for "nofollow" (no quotes). If
you see nofollow in the code there is a chance you aren't doing
anything in terms of inbound links to your site.
> What about website like here, where you can leave your URL in your
> profile? Is that to be avoided?
This site uses nofollow so when you post your URL here you arent
making back links.
> What about URL as part of signature?
In most cases no again
The best thing to do is make great content and lots of it! When you
make content that is of value to users others will link to you. I'd
focus on unique quality content on your site and tell others in your
industry.
Sorry for the not so great news but I hope it helps!
> other peoples blogs about my relavent subject/website, leaving a link
> to my site?
That is comment spamming- Google devaluates it, and I also wouldn't
say that it's good for the image of you/your site.
Participating in user communities can be an effective way to let
people know about you, your site, and build an image- if it is
applicable in the case of your target audience. But not for links.
Also it can be a good idea to start a blog- if you have something
really interesting to say, and your target audience is opened to this.
> What about URL as part of signature?
Useless (for ranking)- do you think Google cannot recognize signiture
dropping?
> What about website like here, where you can leave your URL in your
> profile? Is that to be avoided?
Profile pages are not crawled here, any other link is nofollowed.
Otherwise this group would be full of spam.
> Where do articles that you might write on say ezinearticles.com? Are
> those wrong?
Near to worthless.
> BB, can you tell me, if you have a website where people find you other
> than Google and natural links
Natural links naturally come from people who have already found your
site- nobody will link to your site without looking at it, or if yes
then this obviously exactly indicates the value of that links.
Otherwise probably not I'm the best person to ask this: my opinion is
that sites (ecommerce) that cannot live without the free traffic from
Google should be completely cleaned out from Google's index- because
this means that these sites cannot provide any special value to users,
or the business model behind them is dead.
If you can provide something special, something really good, something
interesting, somehting that strictly separates you from your
competitors and in your niche raises you above them, then your
visitors, users, media, even the correct competitors will appreciate
your business- and this is what can be recognized by Google.

<So blogging doesn't mean create your own blog? Do I then comment on
other peoples blogs about my relavent subject/website, leaving a link
to my site?
Basically yes. You cannot create sites just to promote you own site.
You can comment on other peoples blogs with a link in your signature
but typically not very effective. You COULD ask them for a article
made up by them or you to post on there site. This has been extremely
effective for us and is one way we do get backlinks.
<Where do articles that you might write on say ezinearticles.com? Are
those wrong?
It's not wrong and is one way to do this. Most article directories do
not count as much as they used to but it is still a method. It has
been our experience that having the content on your site is much
better.
<What about website like here, where you can leave your URL in your
profile? Is that to be avoided?
The links here are no-followed. That means they pass no pangrank and
are useless for this. They can be avoided with a re-nofollow command
placed in fron tof the link.
There are tons and tons of sites out there related to your industry.
Think outside the box. How can you help them in order for them to help
you?
Thank you, somewhat clearer. Hopefully will get clearer after I read a
dozen more times or so.
Another question. The outgoing links on my site to other relavent
sites I feel are important, but some of them also have links to me on
their site, because I am relavent to their site. I am trying to
provide a one stop resource for familes who are reeling with a child
in Intensive Care. So I would really like to keep them there. If I
make them "No Follow" does that help me? If so, is adding no follow
and easy fix?
Just thought some of you might like to know, I am back on page ONE!!!
Have no idea why, cuz I haven't managed to make any changes yet since
I wasn't sure what to do. The only change I made was removing some txt
yesterday after someone said it really didn't look like it was for
readers. So I took it out. It was there before, so I am not sure that
had anything to do with my reappearance, but it will stay out either
way. Everything else is the same. So this weeks nightmare is over for
now. Thanks for the help. You can see for yourself by looking under
"preemie clothes"
