The company I work for is holding an SEO contest to learn more and share SEO information through the various groups. So we chose the phrase "Yoshirolla Kilomantra" as our search phrase and we all went nuts making our pages and trying to scramble for top spot.
I created a very simple page http://www.davehamel.com/Yoshirolla-Kilomantra/Yoshirolla-Kilomantra.htm for my entry and on Friday I was number one on Google. Today, I am nowhere to be found. My website is verified with webmastertools. My domain shows up if you search for it with "Dave Hamel",but if you search for "Yoshirolla Kilomantra Dave Hamel" nothing.
Any thoughts? I haven't done anything blackhat that I can think of and if I did, wouldn't it ban my entire site?

Dunno. But it gives me a clue about two words NOT to put on any of my sites.

SO tell me Dave .. Why should I give away some deep secrets to you?
On friday google seen your web page. It takes virtually all NEW pages and places them near the top. Then .. it takes away what it giveths. You need .. good quality relevant incoming links. When google sees more links to you that are relevant, you might start to reappear.

I am not looking for any secrets per se. What I am wondering is why I don't even show up anymore. All my coworkers started the contest at the same time, and a friend linked to my page from his blog here http://sleepycatpaul.livejournal.com/ and he shows up in the results. So I have definitely done something to anger the SEO Gods. But for the life of me I can't think of what it is.
The whole learning thing becomes moot if I can't figuer out what is a no-no and what is allowed. And as far as I can tell I am not pushing the boundaries of acceptable linking by any means.

Your main page davehamel.com has not been crawled since May 5. I looked at your site map.. Your main page should have a priority of 1.0 not .5 Once google crawls your main page again it should see the internal link to Yoshi. Chnage the freq to daily for the main page. Add a freq for yoshi page of daily and priority of .5 Go into webmaster tools and resubmit your sitemap.

If you look at google cache of your home page www.davehamel.com, you will see that it was indexed on 10 June and DID NOT then have the link to your Yoshi page on so google will not be aware of the link until it next crawls. I suggest you focus on doing all you can to stimulate a crawl of your Homepage and your Yoshi page.
There is one other small detail you may have overlooked!
Yes, over a period Google would probably figure out that one of these two versions needs to be dropped, but in a competitions, every little helps!
Even if it is not the cause of the invisibility, I thought you'd be keen to know that in the context of SEO, URLs should always be regarded as case-sensitive.
Good luck with the competition!
Robbo
PS 'kilo' is the metric prefix meaning 1000 thus kilomantra is a thousand prayers or a single prayer equal to 1000 basic ones. IT computing (but not telecoms) the prefix kilo equates to 1024 thus a kilomantra spoken by a computer boffin is 2.4% holier than one spoken by a telecoms engineer. :-)
Robbo, damn good eye on catching the URL difference! I ended up using what I copied and pasted from the URL in the address bar of my browser when I was visiting the page although a quick and dirty little 301 redirect should fix Dave up with no problems.
"Microstuffed IIS", I'm still and likely will be laughing about that one for some time to come! Lovin' it! :-()
"computer boffin is 2.4% holier than one spoken by a telecoms engineer" Oh shit! Is that ever going to upset the tables at the next MPEG meeting I go to where the Computer boffins are already at war with the Telecom weanies!

Sorry though, I didn't quite use the anchor text you were asking for on your competition page.
You'll be sure to tell me if I win, right? :-()
Of course I can't win YOUR competition but, and if it is a BIG but, if my page does even half way decent, it should give yours a fair boost as well.
Sometimes one can't climb up out of the hole that one is in but one can usually always stomp on everyone else so they are at least deeper in the hole. :-()
Craig
p.s. although that page will of course show no PageRank, almost all the other pages linked in similarly are PageRank 3 and although a PageRank of 3 is not all that much, it is better than a kick in the teeth. :-)

...it's the secret method to gain links. All I need to do is pretend I'm in an SEO competition where I'll win the respect of my peers and so on, and people will link to me!
They never mention that in the 'how to get links' lists.
By a strange cooincidence it just so happens my main website is in an SEO competition...
You can't blame me for trying. ;) But I did make sure to digg the cass- hacks page. Only a few more hundred to go for main page status.

:-()
Sometimes it just feels right, ya know?
Also, I get to play too, even though I can't win so I get a little benefit anyway.
The big thing is though, doing that got me out of a slump of not having updated my site for a while so that's a good thing. I do have a project I've been working on and documenting for about the past month and a half though but I haven't been too highly motivated. :-()

And hopefully they don't!! :-()

Name your URL! You do realize though that you puts your money down and you takes your chances, right? I just somehow don't have it in me to put a link on my site without building relevance for it so you might not want my "help". ;-)

I'd think you daft if you didn't! :-)

Cool! Any forums out there where I can go to whore out my Dugg page? :-()
I mean besides this one?
You think daavq realizes he created a monster? :-)
> You think daavq realizes he created a monster? :-)
Happily yes.
For me this is more a learning experience than anything. I am hoping to be able to apply this learning to clients later on, but I think it is important to figure out who gets ranked for what. Everyone in the competition will need to provide documentation on how they got the rank and it is spaced over 5 engines so the results are a little more aggragated and no black hat is allowed. To also level the playing field we said no one can get the "yoshirolla-kilomantra" domain and because it is a nonsense phrase, quality content is whatever you make it.
Some people have already started creating videos and stuff like that trying a more viral strategy.
Craig, if you can win this thing, then props to you! You then have the right to talk SEO smack to other!
Hi to everyone in the thread, I enjoyed reading all the tips and info.
The videos I created are in no way meant to be viral, I thought about doing a viral campaign with a creative in the office, but decided I have too much on the go to execute something good. Someone had tagged a few silly videos with yoshirolla kilomantra so I decided that I would just take it up a notch.

I'll give you a subpage, to make it fairer. This has content and not too many external links. Do your worst. ;-)

Not a chance of that happening. Is a funny thought though.
spypucca - I did a site:www.example.com search in Google and see you have ~240 pages indexed with about 40 in the Supplemental index but I don't see your you-know-what page listed there at all, at least in Google.
It is possible that with pages in the Supplemental index that Google isn't indexing all of your pages whether Primary index or Supplemental index.
The primary cause of pages being in the Supplemental index is a lack of PageRank but I see that your entrance page has a PageRank of 5/10 which is pretty good. However I also see many pages that have very low PageRank.
PageRank flows "from" one page "to" another via links. The more links TO a page, all things being equal, the higher the PageRank for that page. The more links OUT of a page, the less PageRank each individual link passes on "to" the linked to page.
PageRank doesn't actually flow out of your site via external links like they are leaks but instead their value, in essence becomes mirrored across to the linked to page.
What all this means in your case would seem to be that while some pages of your site have high PageRank, overall PageRank is not flowing well through your site.
And, since PageRank is spread via links, this would suggest that your site could use a better internal linking scheme so PageRank can flow more evenly within it. If it takes a human too many clicks to get from one page to another, chances are that PageRank won't flow through the site as well either.

Interesting. Of course, Google can see the competition and is probably learning more than the contestants.
I would expect all sites registered to a competitor's userid in Webmaster Tools or Google Analytics to come under scrutiny - after all, SEO is technically against the guidelines and SEO competitions most certainly are.
But thanks for the show. I'm watching and learning _without_ exposing my customers.
