Subject: SEO company pretends special deal with Google
Hi, I got this email on my website's mail address the other day. I
guess they're total fraud, but I thought I'd ask.

Hello Chase,

I have just visited your website at http://www.usedcarsorangecounty.com
and thought you might have an interest in our services.

We are an internet marketing firm specializing in search engine
placement. We have standing agreements in place with Google and Yahoo
to list our clients in the top three sponsor results on a flat rate
monthly fee. This is not pay-per-click.

When you have a moment, please visit www.google.com or www.yahoo.com
and perform a search for "search engine placement", where you will
always see a link to our website in the top three sponsor results.

We can provide the same valuable service to you and will customize a
package to fit your monthly budget.

Thank you,

Jeff Altneu

Funny. They are providing Pay Per Click but since they charge a flat
rate (which I am sure is based upon how much it cost to meet the PPC
requirements to stay in the top 3 positions) and saying it is not PPC.
I suppose it could be fraud since they are saying it is not Pay Per
Click but it may skirt the fraud issue by charging a flat fee to the
client. They are marketing to the naive and those who are unfamiliar
with how SEM works. I am sure there a plenty of people out there who
will fall for this though.

Hey?? PPC might increase you traffic, but I can tell you from
experience that it doesn't change your serps.

Yeah, but if you notice the wording they never mention anything but
the Top 3 Sponsored Results so in reality they are not promising good
SERPs. The uninformed may infer that is what they mean but they cover
themselves pretty well with the mention of sponsored results.

Yes, of course they hunt for the naive. But it's their claim to have
special partnership with Google and Yahoo for which their ass isn't
covered.

cipango, you are right but I would be willing to bet that simply
having a dedicated account rep, which many SEM companies have, could
cover them. I agree with you that it is fraudulent but they may be
covered in technical terms.

I wonder if their account rep would be happy knowing what their client
is doing though.  ;-)

I like this from the Google Webmaster Help Center

http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=3...

====================
Be wary of SEO firms that send you email out of the blue.
Amazingly, Google gets these spam emails too:

"Dear google.com,
I visited your website and noticed that you are not listed in most of
the major search engines and directories..."
