Is it just me or is Google increasingly blocking advanced search operators?
I keep getting blocked. Just a moment ago I got blocked and challenged for a captcha. Entered the captcha and then got redirected to the same message without a captcha.
Anyone else seeing this a lot? My machine is clean BTW. But I know that I might have some small issue with cookies.

All I can say is ... it just happens. None of the presumed tell-tale conditions apply. And it's caused by a simple refresh as well, so unrelated to any search queries.

I get it sometimes when navigating through pages in SERPs. I click on a page number and get the message, going back and doing it again, same thing, going back and clicking on the "NEXT" link is OK. Sometimes I get it when clicking "NEXT" but clicking on the page numbers is OK.
I haven't tried a refresh but that might be something to try, which I will next time it happens.

What I meant is that sometimes a simple refresh of a page from any of Google's applicaitons (groups, search, etc) brings on that message and the CAPTCHA.

Oh, my bad.
But, as luck would have it, I had an opportunity to try it real soon just after posting and a refresh still got me the automated whozywhatsit messages again so I kinda sorta figure out what you were talking about independently.
Your verification of that though will save me from trying it in the future again and again wondering why it didn't work for me if it worked for you.
The walls in my office have enough forehead shaped dents as it is so I thank you and my walls thank you! :-()
Mine and yours is not to question how the mysteriously and apparently buggy Group format (and some other G environments) work ;) Only to complain, of course LOL
