I probably 'over optimised' this site towards the end of last year, and fairly convinced it's been under a penalty since around March.
Recently after changing the content of the site, I issued a reconsideration request - very detailed.
A couple of weeks later, the site shifted back to where I'd usually expect to see it.
As of three days ago, traffic has dropped substantially again, and a site: search shows the index page not in the index at all, whereas a search for www.backlesslingerie.com returns the index page.
I've heard rumours here that this is indicative of a penalty. Would love your thoughts
Hello I agree with Phil .. I also looked at the site. Very nice..er...er...er.. picture. LOL .. Your home page I do not feel it is over optimized. There is no spam It is well structured seo wise. I did find some bad links at http://www.bad-neighborhood.com/text-link-tool.htm you migth want to check that out. the site is not that accurate though.
No, it's not over optimised NOW - I fixed that - but if you check the wayback machine you'll see I went crazy trying to optimize for the term Lingerie - check about Jan this year.
Bad neighborhood? Na.. don't think so.. even if bad neighborhoods have linked to us (we did get a link from a porn site once - man... the traffic we had for a few days) - but we've never linked back - our links are earned.

Completely irrelevant to your actual question, but in the advert at the bottom right of the Homepage do you mean "More discrete than a brief" or "More discreet than a brief"?
Maybe it's just the peculiarities of my set up (MS Windows Vista) but the video would not run under either Firefox 2.0.0.5 or IE 7.

re: the video would not run. do you mean you couln't hear audio?
That's deliberate.. I muted it because the model possibly should stick to modelling rather than public speaking. A rather high timbred voice - didn't want to scare the living daylights out of people that had their speakers on.
According to Xenu, you have a over 50 internal URLs being redirected; as these URLs appear on multiple pages, that produces several hundred 301 and 302 redirections.
Some of them involve MULTIPLE redirection, for example:
On machine A - desktop PC with Vista, Firefox & IE & Real. FF says I need an additional plugin, I click install, it says Windows 11 is available, I click to install, it says Windows 11 is not available.
On machine B - laptop running XP Pro and Firefox. A popup error message appears: "Illegal operation in plugin. The plugin performed an illegal operation." After clicking the exit/cancel numerous times, it eventually offered to show the movie in an external player and after downloading and clicking more buttons it did run in Windows Media Player.
I'm not saying there is anything wrong with your site. But whatever the cause of the problem, this is my user experience.

Ok.. so, yup, before someone chimes in to let me know the site doesn't validate. I'm aware of that (I would love to change it to a table-less layout if I had the ability or time to rewrite zencart with a tableless design), I'm now aware that zencart uses a far too complex system of redirects (although I think you'll find that's to do with the appending of session id's, which won't happen if you crawl as gbot), I'm (now - thankyou Robbo) aware that the video doesn't show to everyone.
All good advice, but the original question still remains.
The site has been much the same for the past two years - only recently have I seen this new 'problem' where the index page is not indexed..
So back to the original question. Why does the index page turn up for a search for the url, but is nowhere to be seen in a site:search? Is this indicative of a penalty, or is it a 'googlebug'? Does anyone have any thoughts about that?

Doc, you may want to use a different method to embed your video, which will be valid . Might even help with misisng FF plugins - though that's a chronic FF and Netscape problem.

Webado -thanks for your excellent tutorial - I'll go flash as you suggest. It's weird that some firefox's are having probs - no such issues from this end.
Abra - you are absolutely 100% correct - thankyou - it is there, just buried really really deeply. That doesn't seem normal to me.. I wonder why it could be?
You'll also notice a whole lot of extraneous stuff indexed - a word of warning if you're using the google python based sitemap generator - be careful about using your server logs as input - it's convenient, but if you're not careful to robots.txt out info you don't want indexed, it will be. It's possible to get things indexed that have zero incoming links (externally or internally) with sitemaps.

For flash I also have a similar tutorial on embedding swf
I have found a good tool for encoding a wmv to flv ( Free Riva FLV Encoder 2.0) and another one that provides a swf player for it (http:// www.jeroenwijering.com/?item=JW_Media_Player ) . The final resut can be embedded using the very same flash embedding methods like Satay method or the better swfobject method.
Rumor has it even better scripts are in the works, but the dust hasn't settled on them yet.

As far as where the page is under site: I have seen much "juggling" around after the "Supp" tag removal. It used to be so clear that when you did a site: the main index pages were at the top with the supps at that bottom with a usually clear border between the two. Not sure that is the case now. Yes it still seems to be ordered by "popularity" but also looks like a little semantics added in for flavor. I don't think the dust has settled on this yet so the analytics keep changing. Maybe one of the great minds here can get a good working understanding but then,as always, when you think you have it it changes again.
Maybe compare the number of hits to the home page and the inner category and product pages. Maybe then add in some link data as well as some long tail or popular searches and see if there is any correlation.
btw - Instead of abreviating to abra, you can use Tim if you wish.
