Subject: Titles used in Google index
I noticed that for some sites, Google will display the main URL link
and then a selection of links to sub pages below it. What I was
wondering, is what governs the title text displayed for each of those
sub pages.

For example, a search for CNN displays a link to the main cnn.com page
and then the following links to sub pages:

World
US News
Sports

I note that the link text used for each of these doesn't always
correspond to the actual titles of those pages. So, is the text used
something internally generated by Google or is it something that the
webmaster has stated in a Sitemap file or does it depend on the text
used in the link to these sub pages from the main index page?

They are called sitelinks.

They are completely automatic.
