Some of you may have started to notice a change to the drop-down list
that appears when you start typing your query on the Google homepage.
In the past, you'd just see a list of your previous searches (if you
had your browser's search history feature enabled, that is). Now,
you'll see Google Suggest -- suggested queries that match what you've
started to type in real time! Each suggestion will be paired with an
estimate of the number of results for that query.
We're rolling this feature out to all Google.com users over the next
week, so if you don't see it yet, stay tuned. To read more about
Google Suggest and this launch, check out this post on the Official

Fast work, thanks. I mentioned 3 hrs. ago you turned off my Google
Suggest on the homepage (I had it all summer as part of an
experiment), but now it's back up. I really like it. Plus my previous
searches are still coming up on the Google toolbar, so the two
together is real nice.

My preferences page does not contain the 'Do not provide query
suggestions in the search box' option, so I am unable to disable this
feature normally. However, as a workaround I'm using the following
URL to search: http://www.google.com/webhp?complete=0

I have no doubt that Google Suggest is a welcome tool for many Google
users. However, not all of us are thrilled about the mysterious
appearance of this feature.
I really would like to see Google provide their users with an
explanation on the search page, at www.google.com, as to what is
happening and how to deal with it. Not everyone wants Google Suggest
and it is quite baffling when we intentionally have our internet
search history disabled, to find entries suddenly popping up in the
search box.
I spent hours trying to figure out what was "wrong" with my system
before I found out about Google "Suggest." In this day and age of
wide-spread malicious software planting itself on our machines, a
change in behavior such as this, without an explanation is quite
frustrating.
For those users who do NOT want the Google Suggest feature to
function, they need to be aware that in some cases, even though the
Preference is already set to "Do not provide query suggestions in
search box," the setting is not "holding" and Google provided entries
still appear in the search box when you start typing. I never go to
or use Google Preferences, yet had to go there in order to solve this
problem.
I had to click on "save preferences" even though the preference was
already pre-selected. Will Google be fixing this "issue?"

Does anyone know why my preferences page would not contain the option
for 'Do not provide query suggestions in the search box'? I've never
seen this option under preferences, and I've tried it logged in, not
logged in, from different computers, etc.

I don't like the Suggestions at all. Before I found this thread, I
didn't realize it was something recently added . I tried every "delete
search history" and preference setting I could find (or your site has
listed), but it won't turn off. It even gives suggestions when I'm not
signed in. I do not have the option to disable it on my Google
preference page. How to I turn it off? It is really annoying.

Thanks for posting that link. At least I can search without the
annoying Suggestions until I can figure out how to disable it. I don't
have the option to disable it on my preferences page either.

I'm sure that everyone at Google has their hands full as they
implement this new feature, but many of those users who wish to
disable Google Suggest are having various problems in achieving that.
I do hope that Google representatives are monitoring all discussions
here, as well as in the troubleshooting discussion group. It is
becoming difficult to do, because many users are starting an entirely
new thread, so their various experiences are not all located in one
place.
The recommendation to disable the feature in preferences is not
consistently working (if it the Query preferences are present at
all.)
When the preference for "do not provide query suggestions in the
search box" is already selected, it is not intuitive for users to
think that they need to click on "save preferences" for a preference
that was already selected, but that is what it takes sometimes.
Users are also reporting that the Query preferences appear and
disappear at will, making it impossible to achieve consistency in
disabling Google Suggest.
Please let us know that the powers that be are aware of these problems
we are having and are addressing them.

I'm very aggravated and annoyed with Google Suggest.
It has a sloppy and unaesthetic appearance.
I do not need it.
I do not want it.
I did not ASK for it.
I am not a stupid child who needs "help" or "suggestions" in searching
for information on the Net.
I want a way to TURN IT OFF, or else I will PERMANENTLY set my
homepage to another search engine.
I do not like being annoyed at a dependable and reliable service/
search
provider/E-mail provider that I have very *very* happily used for
years.
I have repeatedly followed the suggestions and methods offered by
Google Help.
They do not work for longer than a half hour.
I will not stand for having to fiddle and diddle settings every time I
open my browser.
I was so annoyed when this first started happening to me that I was
not going to use Google for searches anymore, however I have been able
to get my Preferences set so that Google Suggest is disabled (at least
until I clean my cookie files out.)
Although I would prefer that the default for Google Suggest be
disabled so I don't have to worry about maintaining cookies for
Google, it may be that as frustrated and annoyed as some of are with
Google Suggest, the majority of users may truly appreciate it or not
care one way or another and they will blindly accept this. Those of
us seeking answers and solutions to this new, unexpected behavior are
probably in the minority. But, Google should still be interested in
our opinions and concerns as well.
If you prefer Google over other search engines, have you considered
using the link that CoderDude posted that is an alternate page to
search from? This page should have Google Suggest disabled with no
action from you. I'm sure that Google will get the Preferences bugs
worked out soon, but in the meantime, you might be more comfortable
using the alternate page.

Here are some of the suggestions I have received from Google Suggest
while trying to search the web:
how to have sex
how to eat a girl out
how to deep throat
where is the g spot
when will i get my period
how to give head
where are my balls
make my boobies one more size
I want to have sex with my daughter
go fug yourself
This is just the tip of the iceberg. Perhaps this feature is not a
good idea. I would like to see Google make the default for this
feature be OFF. Let people who want it turn it on.
Sure I can turn the feature off, but what if I use several public
computers? I have to remember to turn this off every time? It may
be
easier to find a different search engine...

This is something that should be available to those who opt for it,
not to opt out of. What a nuisance - and talk about bowdlerdized -
this obviously filters out "inappropriate" sites.
It would at least be interesting if it truly showed the most common
searches.
I like being able to see my previous searches but Google-suggest is
just unnecessary and annoying.

Google is not saving my preferences. One reason I switched to Google
over yahoo was that it didn't have those annoying "search
suggestion". I tried to edit my preferences and save (several times)
but when I re-open my browser, it's wrong again. What do you
suggest? I like google otherwise and don't want to have to go back to
yahoo or something else.

I agree with absolutely everything that Julian said. This doesn't
help the user - it's simply distracting. Let me make my own decisions
about what I'm searching for.
There is no apparent way to disable this beyond the session level.
This is also the case at Yahoo - do you really want to be providing
service that's at the same level as Yahoo?
> There is no apparent way to disable this beyond the session level.

I haven't had any problems with my saved preferences being maintained
beyond the session level. Google Suggest is disabled for me and has
remained so.
If clicking on "save preferences" even if the appropriate option is
pre-selected for you, have you explored the following help file or
tried the URL that CoderDude posted earlier in this discussion?
A very irritating feature you have chosen to incur upon us. I have
cleared every cache that I can find. I then have changed the
preference to be disabled. It stays disabled for the current session
and no longer. I have read and followed (to the best of my humble
ability) the article in your Help Center that you have referenced.
Please to get rid of this irritant out of my life!!!! PLEASE!!!!
Thank you.

Google appears to have a problem with Opera cookies.
Like many others, I wanted to disable this offensively presumptuous
feature. I went to the preferences page, but no matter what I did to
enable cookies, it kept showing "You appear to have cookies disabled."
In fact, I had to go to Firefox to sign in and post here.
Furthermore, Google has no provision for feedback to report this
problem (unless you count here). There were references to a web form
at www.google.com/support, except there is no web form at www.google.com/support.

paigeburr is absolutely right. Please default the search auto-
complete feature to off. Here's why: my child started to type "how to
" and Google suggested inappropriate queries such as "how to have sex"
and "how to get pregnant" in the drop-down box. I discoved this
feature can be turned off in the preferences page, but that's not
acceptable. It should be off by default until explicity turned on in
the preferences. This will help prevent kids from learning how to
have sex on Google!

I am disappointed to see that you instituted Google Suggest in the
search box.
The Internet is an important information highway and I would like to
see more respect for this from Google..
I believe most people are like myself and know what they want to type
in - to interrupt work to suggest something is invasive and
overbearing.
Additionally, Google Suggest slows down typing into the search box and
as far as I can tell it must be turned off every time which further
interrupts meaningful work.
The logic of why you did this escapes me unless it is discourage or
slow down independent thought or to help sell particular products or
solutions. I have noticed search query suggestions contain names of
pharmaceutical drugs.
I have spent futher time, approximately one hour, searching for a way
to give feedback without necessarily posting it to a group.
So this is my request/feedback to discontinue Google Suggest. At the
very least allow people to turn it off until they choose to turn it
back on themselves.
Also it would be friendly if there was an easier way to give feedback.
Especially about things this dramatic that are rolled out with no
announcement.

This is a joke...the site hijacks what you are trying to type, and
disabling the feature will not persist reliably (using IE7 on XP).
Here is the ONLY reliable way to avoid this: use http://www.google.com/webhp?complete=0 instead of www.google.com. It's pretty sad it has to be this way...

I am an computer illiterate, using mozilla, and cannot disable the
intrusive and unhelpful query suggestion drop. My preference page is
