As you've probably noticed from several of the messages posted in this
group, we're rolling out some experimental new iGoogle features to a
small percentage of our users. Since we're running a controlled
experiment, we're not offering a method of opting in or out of the new
features.
If you've got the new features and you'd like to share your feedback,
I encourage you to click "Learn more" at the top of your iGoogle page
and take the survey linked from the "Learn more" page.
its a nice idea, provided you have the real-estate (which I useualy
dont!)
The new ui should have an option to plant itsself along the top, as
well as the left side...
I do like the rounded edges, and the snappier feel to the UI.
be aware that some gadgets (like the enhanced gmail reader!) dont play
particularly well.... the reply button to an email is sometimes (cant
reliably replicate) missing. I think it might be under the left tab!
WHEN IS THIS MESS ON MY HOME PAGE GOING TO BE TAKEN OFF! I HAVE USED
THIS "NEW iGOOGLE" AND I DON'T LIKE IT. IV'E TAKEN YOUR SURVEY THREE
TIMES AND TOLD YOU WHAT I THINK ABOUT IT. IT SERVES NOTHING "NEW"
OTHER THAN TAKING UP SPACE. IT'S REDUNDANT. WHY WOULD I WANT TO GO TO
THE "LEFT SIDE" TO USE MY GADGETS WHEN THEY'RE RIGHT THERE IN FRONT OF
ME FOR THE "CLICKING" TAKE IT OFF!!!! PLEASE!!!!!!

Why can we not opt out of this? It has bugs (it occasionally opens
infinite new tabs in my IE7 browser window so I have to kill the
process), it shows less of the RSS feeds without clicking a link and I
don't want it. I don't like my.yahoo.com but I don't want to keep
using this. I don't understand how a controlled experiment means no
opt out - I will need to opt out by not using igoogle if I can't opt
out with google's help. This is no way to do usability...

This "experimental" new iGoogle is for the birds. The side bar is
redundant, to go to a site all I had to do was click on the name in
the header for that site. I hate the new "edit menu" for each
gadget. The +/- worked fine. PLEASE let me have my old iGoogle
back.
Up until now (with the exception of messing with Calendar) I loved
having iGoogle as my home page. I will go back to MSN or Yahoo if I
have to deal with this experiment much longer. In the future, please
ask me before you try things out on me.

I agree with the other posters here. The side bar is redundant, buggy,
and useless! I have the control to customize my iGoogle page with
everything EXCEPT removing that dang thing. If I had a nice 22"
widescreen monitor, I might not mind as much but it's just taking up
space, making the page load slower, and dampening my Google
experience. I PREFER THE OLD VERSION.

I'd like to chime in as yet another who finds the new Left navigation
bar/tabs to be horrible. They cut down on browser real estate without
adding any useful new features.
If you plan on keeping this interface in the future, make sure we
have a way to opt out and use the original tabs on top layout.
Gonna go and see what other start pages have to offer and see if
I can find a replacement for you guys in the meantime.

All I want is for you guys to put the tabs back on the top of my
window where they belong - I hate it when people mess with the layout
of my spaces - I know where everything is and get really mad when
people mess with it! I do not like the tabs on the side as they take
up way too much viewable space put them back immediately or give me
the option to do so.

THIS IS HORRIBLE.
Why would you mess something up that worked perfectly before?
I have trouble as it is with real estate space on my screen trying to
fit all my gadgets up so I don't have to scroll 5 pages to see them
all, and now you guys add a COMPLETELY REDUNDANT column on the left
side? Seriously?
Why take away the + sign next to the stories? I think it was AWESOME
that I could just read the topic of news articles and if I WANTED to
read more about it, I would expand it (thus SAVING ME some real estate
space).
Like a couple people have said, all I needed to do was click on the
title and it would take me to the page.
Please 1.Take away that left column 2. add the + signs next to the
stories allowing for expansion when it is wanted 3. Next time, ask for
permission to mess with someone's customizable page. People customize
it for a reason; they want it a certain way, and when it's not that
way anymore, it tends to get annoying.

I agree with some of the writers. The left side, Home is not only
redundant but takes space away form my home page and does not allow to
see all the gadgets at a glance. By the way, would be nice if we
could size some of the gadgets to be able to fit better on the home
page.

I use 3 gadgets - Gdocs, Gmail, and Greader. And now, oh wow. I click
to read the new email showing in my inbox in the little gadget on my
homepage.... and a big fat tab thing opens and hangs on 'loading'.
This is crap, and I would like to opt out.
GET ME OUT OF THIS!!!!
I am trying to be PRODUCTIVE Google. Not piss around trying to cope
with your stupid games.

Probably not the ideal solution, but have you tried doing a
http://www.google.com/ig/resetprefs.html? It will of course reset your
iGoogle page to default, but it might do it to the original IG. No
promises but it's worth a shot yes?

Please don't do this "rolling out to a small percentage" with no opt
io or out. You will always find people, early adopters, who will
gladly try experimental features if you just put a link somewhere, I
know I would. However now, since I cannot opt out, iGoogle has become
almost unusable for me.
I don't want to chat from that page, Gmail is bad enough, I have a
client for that. I don't want tabs with gadgets all over the place, I
don't want Google Apps there, ...
iGoogle *was* great for quickly checking Gmail, Twitter and the
weather with some funny stuff around as a distraction, and the big
seach bar in the middle. I don't want to spend all my day on that page
and I have tabs elsewhere.
So please, let me use the old iGoogle and if you don't... Well there
are many 3rd party "home page" alternatives.
I have emailed twice (and really did not care for your response).
Have filled out the survey once, and will fill it out again.
All I ask is that you PLEASE CHANGE MY HOMEPAGE BACK.
I did not ask for these features, and really do not like the changes
you have made.
And using the excuse "running a controlled experiment" does not fly
with me. This is not something you usually drop on someone who has
taken the time to personalize a HOMEPAGE to work in a way that they
want, and for the way that they work. This is not the way Google
usually works, either.
If you want to offer these changes, then fine, offer them. But don't
force them on those of us who do not want them.
I switched to Google because I liked the simplicity of the iGoogle
page, and the fact I could make it do what I want. I have been
singing your praises to friends and coworkers ever since I found this
page. But now...not so happy. And not so willing to share what you
offer.

Amazing - I can't believe someone associated with Google actually had
the gall to say, "Since we're running a controlled experiment, we're
not offering a method of opting in or out."
What happened to the "don't be evil" philosophy of Google? When did
Google decide that Microsoft arrogance was something to emulate?
I think I will provide my feedback by chosing to have a different home
page.

You NEED to stop this experiment. Fire the person or people who
planned this. Do you really want to actually LOSE users through
conducting a usability study? I mean there have to be better ways to
determine how much people HATE the left hand navigation and other
changes without angering people to the point of changing home
pages.....

It sounds like at the very least an 'opt out' link would be a welcomed
addition to your iGoogle experiment. Please consider making this a
priority. Also, please consider setting it up as opt in/out for
anyone. I expect you would probably net more constructive with willing
participants? Thank you for your consideration :)

dieth - Your other post was under "Google Enthusiasts" - is that the
one you mean? Or was there a different post?
This may just be a temporary fix, but if you click on "My
Account" (upper right-hand corner), then select "Settings" next to the
iGoogle link, at the very bottom of the page (under "Troubleshooting")
is an option to "Restore your iGoogle page to the last backup " -
click on the "Restore Now" button and it *should* work. Good luck!
P.S. Once you've restored your "old" iGoogle page, you should manually
backup your page (again under the "Troubleshooting" section - click
the "Backup" button). It might also be a good idea to export your
iGoogle settings to your computer (under "Export/Import" - click the
"Export" button") - just be sure to remember where you've saved it!
Thank you for your suggestion - sadly it didn't work. Pretty clearly
the ones responsible for this little "experiment" decided to tag the
user account to prevent us from restoring.
I guess I'm back to selecting a new home page. Does anyone have any
recommendations?

Sorry it didn't work for you, Toni! I think if you catch it early
enough (in other words, if the Restore point is before the date/time
that the evil "experiment" started), that fix does indeed work. But
if Google has done another Restore after the experiment, then it's too
late, unfortunately. At least that's my theory!
At any rate, let's hope that TPTB decide to reverse this asap, as it
seems like a very unpopular decision!
