Hate those left tabs? can't take the bugs in trying to read Gmail in
iGoogle Experimental? Then this guide is for you.
Workarounds to opt-out of Experimental iGoogle
A number of users are frustrated with the inability to opt-out of
experimental iGoogle. The following workarounds enable users to opt
out of experimental iGoogle:
Method 1
If you are using Firefox 3.0.1 first go to Method 3 before proceeding.
Copy the code line below and paste into your browser address bar
replacing whatever was there before and hit enter:
Code line: javascript:_dlsetp('v2=0');
You should automatically be opted out of iGoogle experimental and get
the standard iGoogle layout.
Method 2
1.If you are using Firefox 3.0.1 first go to Method 3 before
proceeding. Go to http://www.google.com/ig/sandbox and sign up for the
iGoogle Developer Sandbox.
2.You should now see "Welcome to the iGoogle Developer sandbox" on the
top left of your iGoogle homepage.
3.To leave the iGoogle Developer sandbox visit http://www.google.com/ig/sandbox again and you should automatically be opted out of iGoogle experimental and get the standard iGoogle layout.
Method 3
Do not use Firefox 3.0.1 to view iGoogle if you do not want to be
upgraded to iGoogle Experimental. Every time Firefox 3.0.1 brings up
iGoogle you will be updated. If you already got upgraded and you want
to opt out and continue to use standard iGoogle you can do the
following:
1.In Firefox 3.0.1 change your homepage to Google Classic or any
homepage other than iGoogle
2.Only use iGoogle in an earlier version of Firefox or in IE.
3.Perform either opt-out Method 1 or opt-out Method 2 above using an
earlier version of Firefox or IE.
4.Do not use iGoogle in Firefox 3.0.1, and if you do and want to opt
out again, repeat the above steps.
If you are using Firefox 3.0.1 first go to Method 3 above before
proceeding.
1) Go to http://www.google.com/ig/settings 2) At the foot of the page there is a button called "Export" that will
let you save your settings to disk. Click it and choose a place to
save them.
3) Go to http://www.google.com/ig/resetprefs.html and choose "Reset
all preferences". It will then bring you to a basic setup page asking
you for your interets, theme etc. Just click "See your page". It will
still look like the new iGoogle at this point.
4) Go again to http://www.google.com/ig/settings . At the foot of the
page is a button called "Upload" that will restore your settings from
a file on disk. First use the "Browse" button next to it to choose the
file you created in step one, then click "Upload".
5) Refresh iGoogle and you should automatically be opted out of
Experimental iGoogle and get the standard iGoogle layout.

New technology is great if it works. Who wants a version of their
email that cant forward, reply or attach. This new version is crappy
and beta projects are for testers who WANT to try crappy new software.
I don't appreciate being a Guinna pig.

Who would change an account without asking the person if they wanted
it changed???? I was prowling around google help and I found a
statement thatgoogle wouldn't change my homepage without my
permission. What a lie - they did and I'm NOT happy!!! I have a small
monitor - I don't have room for the waste of space that I consider the
left column to be. I used to think igoogle was an improvement over
Yahoo. At least Yahoo asks before changing things and it lets you
return to a 'classic' page. I guess I'll go back there and fiddle with
it. I hope Google tracks the changes people make - I'm sure I'll be
using igoogle less. Yahoo has the option to get G-Mail on it the way
igoogle lets you see your G-Mail.

Thanks a ton! Method 2 works and you're right; as soon as I opened the
page in Firefox 3 it reverts back to the "experimental" iGoogle crap.
I quickly went to the sandbox again and got my old iGoogle back and it
works fine in Opera, Safari, IE8 Beta and Chrome.
Not that I'll be using Chrome or any other Google products any more
though! I've completely switched over to My Yahoo! and it works great.
I've already copied over all the events in my calendar and now I'm in
the process of backing up all my gmails before I delete them from the
server and close the account.

I'm curious... Why did I have to spend half an hour looking for a way
to opt out of the new broken iGoogle? My Gmail was non-functional,
there were extra useless tabs on the left hand side and the page size
was blown out of the water... Why was there no "opt out" link on this
torpid, sullied, steaming pile of cheetah feces for those of us who
need to work rather than fight with broken functionality?

I have tried all of the above methods and none of them work for me.
I'm using a Mac and Firefox 2.0 but
I tried them all with Safari too. I'm running No Script add on with
Firefox but I retried all the methods with No Script
disabled as well. I'm getting to the party late but I was just
switched a couple of hours ago. I began researching
and working on a fix ever since. Have the fixes been disabled in the
month or so that has gone by?
PS: I switched to iGoogle from My Yahoo specifically because I was
sick of Yahoo forcing changes that I didn't
like on me. I don't know if you work for Google or not but I feel
compelled to point out the significance of the
word "home" in homepage. A home should be a sacred, peaceful, and
comfortable respite entirely under the
user's control. I know iGoogle is free but Google's bottom line is
directly intertwined with the popularity of its
services. You've read the response. Is this new layout popular? Is the
lack of choice popular?

Good luck with My Yahoo. I actually came to iGoogle specifically b/c
Yahoo is always doing stuff like this. Their homepages are filled with
banners and they like to force changes depending on where they want
the ads to appear. You'll pick a skin and layout today and 2 months
later they'll start bugging you about trying the new layout. They
always give you the option to go back to the old layout *but* only for
a few weeks. Eventually, the old layout is gone forever and you're
stuck with something that you may not like. Don't get me wrong, my
iGoogle page was just switched a couple of hours ago and I'm livid.
I've spent every minute since trying to fix it. All of the methods
Dave Last posted do not work for me. At least not on my mac. I'll try
from my PC when I get home.

It's not more organized, it's just an eye-sore with less
functionality.
1) The top tabs use less space
2) The reader gadgets no longer have the buttons to expand. You have
to pick on an options page and everything is either always expanded
(uses too much space even on my 1920 monitor) or never expanded. Plus,
from a graphic design standpoint, always expanded is a very poor use
of whitespace and is much less pleasing to scan for items of interest.
3) My youtube gadget used to show 6 thumbnails, now it shows 1.
4) My gmail gadget now shows too much detail (a privacy issue so now
I will have to not use anything on the same page as my gmail gadget if
I'm working with someone. I often need to use the bookmarks gadget so
this is another small gripe.
By the way, google isn't the only place to get free email, free
storage, etc. And their bottom line is directly related to the
popularity of and traffic to their various sites. You seem to advocate
a "take it or leave it" attitude so that shows that you know nothing
about business sense. All SW providers know they must focus on UI in
order to succeed. And most SW providers allow (but don't force) users
to test new products and services. A company with the resources of
Google should have sent out an email asking for volunteers and left
the rest of us alone. That would allow mindless sheep like you the
chance to try the latest and "greatest" without pissing off anyone.
My advice to you is to start your own company. It will actually make
you a better person to fall on your ass because your attitude sucks as
it is. It would fail miserably but it would be a growth experience.
Until then, feel free to rant on about how users are dumb for wanting
something they like.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! Ahhhhh its fixed! from the moment i
opened my home page and saw that AWFUL tab spot on the left i was
furious and frantically looking for a way to turn it off, and even
more upset when there wasn't any!! it looked terrible, off set
everything, and took up way way way to much space! What a terrible
addition, thank you for finding a way to fix this horrible addition!

Ahh. So none of the methods worked for me but shortly after posting
that, my page was reverted to the old version. It lasted for maybe 10
minutes. The next time I visited a non google page and came back to
it, it had gone back the new. :-/

Just chiming in, because I don't like opening my browser and having it
look like alien space bats took over my homepage. I only use ONE
tab. Do you know what a complete waste the left column is when you
don't have 20 tabs, only the one. Google I love you, now put it
back! I still haven't recovered from the delicious fiasco, now this?

There is another option,
Someone posted earlier that if you change the extension on your
google url from .com to .ie then google thinks you're in Ireland and
they haven't been victimized by the "improvement" yet.
Apparently .co.uk works as well, maybe others.
It's not browser dependant and from what I've heard it always works.
It worked for me.

into my browser. Now I can't even get my iGoogle home page. I can see
it briefly as it loads up, but then it switches to my gmail, full
screen, or whatever tab I click on the left side. How can I get my --
admittedly squished and unreadable -- home page back? Please?

Have tried the java workaround, tried the sandbox thingy, nothing
worked at all. I have looked at a number of discussions, in google
groups and online blogs, and the general reaction (aside from a few
enthusiasts) seems to be "Help, make it quit!" Yet google seems to
have a deaf ear.
- side tab takes up too much space and is worthless - my gadgets are
right there, why do I need another link?
- don't like gmail message summaries, takes too much space and there
are privacy issues here
- seems inconsistent with changes made to the page
I finally changed my home page to the uk version which is still the
old igoogle...so far. Please, all I'm asking is an option to revert to
the old page, or at least options to have the displays show as they
used to (tabs across the top, no email message summaries, etc.).
