What the hell is Google thinking? foisting this on users without (a)
their input and (b) ability to opt out? I give Google 2 years more
sheer momentum and then they will be tanking hard, like Yahoo and AOL
before them.

We've been gathering input on the new features for several weeks from
this group, usability testing, statistical analysis, and survey data.
All of this feedback is important to us and while we weren't able to
respond to all of them, I want to assure you we've been listening.
The new iGoogle features went through the same development process
that all our products do: we prototype them, and put them through a
vigorous set of usability tests and experiments to make sure we are
doing the right thing for users. The iGoogle features we're launching
today went through this exact process and we've made changes along the
way based on feedback from users and developers. Specific examples of
the impact of this group:
* A narrower navigation area on the left side of the page.
* An option to remove the snippets displayed with feeds.
* Gmail reply added was added as soon as possible.
Coming soon:
* Proper links in Gmail
* Drag 'n' drop gadgets between tabs
* Chat
* More canvas view gadgets
I understand your process, but I think the important remark here is
how can we make this "Home" tab removable, therefore restoring our
customized iGoogle page to look like WE want it to look.

The changes were =not explained= and so they came as a complete
surprise. Why is this account suddenly different from another account?
Google doesn't answer the question. At least you guys could have put
up something at the top of the page to explain what happened, like you
normally do. Instead it was a stealth change that came like a slap in
the face.
An opt-out would not only be great, but it is a necessary thing. I do
not appreciate being flung about from one interface to another without
a choice, and though this service is free, there are other options out
there.
Basically, from a user perspective, iGoogle just did an extremely rude
thing. Don't be surprised if people are offended. If you slap a
person, don't be surprised if they don't particularly care that you
say that you are "listening", after.
Bah!
Now I have to go change all my darn tab titles to something short,
like "1" and "2". Not useful in the slightest.

Did you gather the input that nobody likes the fact that this has been
forced on them? Give us an option and we might not feel like we are
being treated like blind cattle. we're not as stupid as you think we
are.

Google is basically saying "We had a terrible idea...and you will be
forced to live with it".
Such a sad thing coming from a company that used to respect it's users
(maybe Google was bought by Microsoft and we don't know it
yet....hahaha...it would at least explain the attitude).
A very long time ago my homepage was a customizable one that I created
on Excite.com. They lost touch with users and I was forced to move on,
eventually landing on iGoogle....I now find my self looking for my
next homepage.

Being nice didn't work... so about a different tact.
This new to me home tab on the left side of my screen is REALLY
pissing me off. What a HUGE waste of screen space. I didn't ask for
this tab, I don't use this tab, and I don't want this tab. Not having
the option to remove it or relocate it has my heart rate elevated, my
palms sweating and my manners going out the window. I'm really FURIOUS
that my iGoogle has been tampered with and if I could Chuck Norris
roundhouse kick the person that forced this on me I would. FUCK YOU
WHOEVER YOU ARE. Give me my old page page STAT!

I hate the new left tabs. It sucks. I'm really pissed off. It takes up
too much space - there's no reason why it can't stay on top. It messed
up the formatting on all my gadgets. The new rounded corners are ugly
and I much prefer the old simpler design.
PLEASE allow us to opt out of the side tabs--you give us a page where
we can set things up as we like, and then take that away AND give us
lots of blanks screen space. I have to agree with the folks who are
comparing this to the kind of lame-brained idiocy forced on us by
Yahoo & MSN.
Paul,
I don't understand. This design is not usable. It just doesn't make
sense. At least give us the option to keep the tabs at the top. The
left nav wastes so much space and there's no reason why it can't stay
at the top - it's not getting in the way of anything. I don't know who
you tested it on but I certainly don't agree.

I am a librarian and I rely heavily on rss feeds that I've organized
in igoogle tabs with three columns. With space removed from the left
of the screen for the tabs, it's much much harder to read my feeds.
They're too cramped. Since I'm probably going to have to reorganize
them, I might as well move them elsewhere if I can't get the old
format back.

The new left tab is horrible. It just lists what I have on the rest
of my Google home page, wasting space and making everything more
cramped. If this can't be removed then I will find another home page.
It's pointless!! It adds nothing!!! Please take it off!!!!
The left tab took just kill igoogle for me, this Homepage was my
favorite, now i hate it. It's ugly and it's not friendly at all,
please google retore the original one, until then, i'll have to resort
to Opera Speed Dial
"Your users are screaming that they don't like your fucking sidebar,
dumb-ass!"
That was as about as well put as I could have made it. I echo the
sentiments of all those wondering why it was foisted upon us without
warning or the ability to opt out. In other words....
WHAT THE FUCK WERE YOU THINKING?
I would have liked to be a fly on the wall at that meeting. You guys
must have been smoking some really good bud to have overlooked these
two important elements of the roll-out (pun intended).
My suggestion would be to fix it fast before all the feeds on my
iGoogle page are filled with stories about how the "Do no Evil" motto
has been trampled upon by the new "Evil Empire". You can bet your
enemies (Redmond) are frothing at the mouth while they get the word
out to every news agency and blogger they can find.
I'm a loyal consumer and it took Google a long time to get me to
switch from Hotmail/MSN. I must admit that now I can't understand why
that was so difficult. Then I remembered....it's because they kept
"improving" shit I didn't want them to.
I agree. This is phenomenally stupid and not user-friendly. Every
usability and presentation expert in the world mocks this exact sort
of wasted space.
And the explanation of the process, while fascinating, has not
answered the question why the left side tabs list is not OPTIONAL
instead of MANDATORY. Basically Google's response to the negative
reaction is: Tough!
As the rest of the world moves towards more customized and
individualized feature sets, Google is moving toward the 1) more
useless; and 2) more rigid and inflexible.
I can't stand the left-side tab (and honestly, I'm hard-pressed to
believe your focus groups or input groups or whatever preferred it
that way, either). I work in software development, so I know exactly
how those stakeholder input processes work:
Developer: Look, we thought it would be great idea to move the tabs
which are taking up minimal space and are at the top of the page where
you'd expect them to be, and put them down the left side where they
will create vast wasted space. We didn't have anything new to offer,
so we thought we'd copy the Microsoft fake-out of moving a bunch of
icons around the Windows interface and calling it a whole new version!
Stakeholder: But it sucks, and I want my old interface back.
Developer: Thanks for your input! Come back again, next time we
might listen to your feedback, ha ha ha ha!
If I don't have the option to to choose the topside home tabs, I'm
dumping iGoogle and finding some other app does something similar. If
I can't find something similar, I'll go without. This is crazy.
