Heelo,
No matter what I do I can't seem to get the Mini to use any gateway.
If we are on the same network we can browse and use it just fine but
doesn't use the gateway.

Our license has expired but says:

The license will expire in 2556579 days.
License valid until: March 7, 9009

Is there something that locks down after it expires?

Any insight would be helpful.

Thanks

Hello,

I'm not sure what you mean by using a gateway, the Mini can only use
one (the default gateway) that you specify when running the Network
Configuration Wizard when installing the Mini:

Configuring the Network Settings
http://code.google.com/apis/searchappliance/documentation/50/installation/InstallationGuide.html#ConfigSoftware

When your license expire in 9009 most likely the world, as we know it
today, will be reduced to dust by the natural forces, so I wouldn't
worry about that ;-)

I'm just trying to find out if there is some kind of blocking that the
mini does? We are able to input all of the network settings, the mini
works perfect on our LAN but can not get to the WAN. We've tried
everything we can think of to get it to work. The box is about 4
years old and is out of support. It worked fine up until about 6
months ago. I didn't notice the problem as I was always accessing it
on our LAN.

We are just trying to get any sort of insight why this is happening.

Thanks

That sounds like a change in the default gateway or somewhere else in
the network, that is not letting the Mini reach your WAN any more.

I would note which host names or IP address the Mini can't reach and
talk to your network team to see why the default gateway is not
providing the Mini access to the WAN any more.

We have double, triple and quadruple checked the gateway and
everything is correct, we even swapped out switches just to make sure
it isn't a hardware issue.
We have a couple of networks to test with and what ever we use the
mini simply refuses to use any gateway.

Packet captures on the gateway show we can see that the mini is
responding to ARPs -- good.
On the gateway (A.B.C.1/24) we can ping the the mini (A.B.C.80/24)--
good.
From a system (A.B.C.100/24) within the same network we can surf to
the mini (A.B.C.80/24)
Packet captures on the network we can see the mini is sending DNS and
NTP traffic--good although the DNS and NTP servers are on the same
network (A.B.C.53/24) .
We have tested the mini's (A.B.C.80/24) on another server and
everything works perfectly so there is nothing wrong with the gateway
or the ip address (A.B.C.80)
However, when traffic from the internet is forwarded to the mini is
simply drops the packet--not good.

The behavior appears to be that the mini isn't applying the gateway
that is configured in the UI but there
is no shell access to confirm ('netstat -nr'). Everything looks right
from the UI in the configuration.
Is there some other log or utility where we can for check errors or
something that might be preventing this basic networking from working?

I'm still confused what you mean with "However, when traffic from the
internet is forwarded to the mini is simply drops the packet"

I guess you mean that nobody can reach the Mini on port 80 from a
network that is behind the gateway, is that it?

Well, if port 80 (or any other port) is reachable from withing the
same network the Mini is (A.B.C.0/24) but not from others (e.g. A.B.D.
0/24) then I would insist to review the gateways in the route, not
just the one the Mini is using.

The Mini will use the gateway only to crawl, not to serve. The Mini
needs the gateway only to find a route to the web servers to crawl and
download content from them, and only uses it for that.

If I guessed correctly and the issue is that no people can do searches
from other networks, then you may need to look at the gateway the
other way around, or look at another gateway.

All this would be easier to discuss knowing how the different elements
are placed in your network, I may be shooting in the wrong direction
here too :\

Thanks again for your reply.

Everything is 100% right with the gateway.

There is a problem with the mini. If there are more logging options,
that might be more productive.

Thanks

Have you done a tracert to the Google box from a location that doesn't
work? If you have, and detected no problems, then you may have a
problem with authorization.

Remember that crawling and serving are two entirely different
mechanisms. A Gateway configured in the Google box will be used for
crawling, but not serving. A Proxy is used for serving. :)
