I have an XML file which itself is a catalog containing metadata for
multiple documents which themselves are XML files. Each document
represented in the catalog XML file has a URL to that document, as
well as various metadata elements which I'd like to be able to search
against.

What would be the best (any) way to have our search appliance crawl
this catalog such that users could search for particular metadata and
be returned results that link to those individual documents? From
what I read, my first guess would be that I need to create/push my own
feed. Am I correct on that?

Creating your push is the best way.
Any other way would lose the metadata.
