We've been pointed down the direct of the mini as a search solution
(the web based custom search engine would actually suit fine but we're
in danger of going over half a million queries per year which is
apparently the limit for the full google hosted solution)

do / can google consider an option of a hosted mini - it's a "black
box" solution so I get no benefit of finding someone and somewhere to
plug it in
or is there anyone here who can recommend a host that's happy to
colocate a mini for us - our web server that it will index in in
Dallas, TX

or even better - does anyone have minis for rent that I can play with
- like to make sure it will meet my needs before splashing out on
one :)

Thanks

You can also try Google's hosting service Site Search.

Thanks Jeff and John

Site search is no good for us - subject to a limit of 500,000 queries
per year (just over a thousand a day!) and the sales rep told me I
need to goto the mini to get more. I don't like the answer - i'd
rather pay someone for a full solution instead of having to mess about
with hardware and hosting - the custom search engine would have been
perfect though :(

Thanks again

Hi again Steve,

For what it's worth, you get the hardware that just plugs into your
existing server racks (unless you do none of your own hosting?), with
purchasing either the Mini or Google Search Appliance. From there are
basic configurations to get your sites crawling, adding a search
function somewhere in your site where it makes sense and you can
basically leave it alone from there unless you want to get fancy.

There are several implementation partners for Google Search (both Mini
and Appliance), as well, that could do the necessary setups for you.
You can find those on the partners page: http://www.google.com/enterprise/gep/index.html.
