I'm excited to tell you that Google Maps is now available for Symbian Series 60 3rd edition devices. Compared to the existing J2ME version that you may be using today, this version of the app offers GPS support on Nokia 95 and a significantly faster startup time!
Just installed v1.70(2) on my Cingular Nokia E62 and it works great! Huge improvement over earlier versions. Handset doesn't constantly ask permission to connect to the web, like it used to. Faster loads and smoother motion. Finally - a usable application.
but i couldn't find a way how to download map packs (per country for example). is there even this kind of feature? i have seen map packs for driving navigational gps devices, why not for mobiles too?
because it's kind of pointless having a gps featured map when i have to be connected to the internet.

Google Maps should have the option to download the maps.
I just installed the application on my Nokia N95 and it is working great, however, i need to be on the internet to be able to use it which defeat the purpose of the GPS.
the other option is that i connect to the internet through my netwrok provider, which is a BIG NO for me!! because that will cost me a LOT of data usage, and i belive it is the same for many other users.

I feel that user experience is a bit better on the Java application, which surprises me. Sure, the symbian one is faster and asks for confirmation less, but may of the prompts that happen in context (on top of the map) in the java app now open new screens and take you away from the context of the map, which makes for a less fluid experience.
I'm also missing a bunch of features relating to favorites. Also, it seems like there is no way to save locations, which - in my oppinion - is a big minus, as that's what I use google maps for a lot. Actually, skip the application specific favorites and connect the next symbian version directly to "my maps" on my google account. Now that would be great.

Wow, this is so much faster than the MIDP version, and my E90 finally has GPS support!!
One big gripe, though: the 1.5.1 MIDP version made use of 100% of the screen, but the native version has two big, fat, ugly bars across the top and bottom of the screen. Please add back the "full screen" mode!

I downloaded GMM to my Nokia E61 last night and I paired it with the LD-3W gps receiver and it fully works. Got a gps lock in about 30 seconds. I actually discovered this by accident. I was playing with the shortcuts and I pressed shift+0 and it prompted me to enable bluetooth. I did and noticed it was searching for the gps so I turned that on and shortly I had a blue dot on my screen showing my current location.
Great app but needs improvements. The above suggestions from other members will make it better.
