Subject: More information on Maps data update
As you all know, we now use Tele Atlas as our data provider for Google
Maps in the US and Canada. We've seen some improvements, and here are
a couple examples:

- block-level addresses (that is, you can see where the 500 block of
Elm Street is when zoomed in)
http://maps.google.com/maps?q=Elm+St,+Mt+Carmel,+Tennessee+37645,+Uni...

- roof-top geocoding (marker placement) of addresses
http://maps.google.com/maps?q=2121+N+Clark+St,+Chicago,+IL&z=19

We know that, in some other cases, the new data may not be as detailed
or up-to-date as what was previously available. We want to fix all map
errors found by our users. The good news is that this will be easier
now that we're using Tele Atlas base map data for all our mapping
products (Google Maps, Google Earth, Google Maps API, and Google Maps
for Mobile). In addition, we have an agreement with Tele Atlas to
share any data corrections with them directly. All products that use
Tele Atlas data, including those not built by Google, will benefit
from these corrections.

To report an error, please use the Tele Atlas tool at http://mapinsight.teleatlas.com.
If you're experiencing issues with the tool, please let us know in
this Help Group, and our Maps Guides will look into it. We're already
working to simplify this process within Google Maps.

The Tele Atlas map database contains hundreds of millions of features
representing every road, city, park, etc., and hand-editing this data
is still a delicate process. Google gets new data from Tele Atlas once
every 3 months, and it currently takes another couple months to fully
process the error reports for each release. Please look forward to an
acceleration of these updates in the future.

Thank you for your continuing use of Google Maps, and for helping us
in our committment to provide the most accurate maps available.

I submitted 9 corrections to TeleAtlas about road corrections all of
which were shot down.  Stating "Your report either lacked necessary
data or described an imprecise geographic location such that we cannot
be sure that we have resolved the problem. Please consider submitting
another report with more complete and precise information."

Is their any way to have them corrected through Google?

If so that would be great, as I have several hundred issued in my area
of the globe.

Thanks

Hi bercar,

Please contact Tele Atlas directly to inquire about your failed
submissions. They'll be able to provide you the feedback you need in
order to successfully submit data errors in the future.

Thanks for the tip, I will certainly contact TeleAtlas about what
happened here.  Like I said there are literally several hundred errors
in the maps for my area.  Since I use Google Maps pretty much everyday
it would be nice to have them corrected.

All I know is, the maps for the Charlotte, NC area are so old they are
pretty much useless.  I'll use other mapping services until Google
gets thiers updated.

Adam,
I'm quite impressed with the roof-top view of Chicago.  I would like
to develop a similar display of the UW Oshkosh Campus, but I'm a
novice at code.  I've only just managed to scrap together a campus map
that shows all of the buildings, parking lots and trees..
http://www.ezra.tv/files/map/campusmap-markers.htm
Eventually, I am hoping to have full 3d building models to go with
this, but it is taking a while.

So, the question is.. If I don't have an "error" to report, but I do
have data... Who do I contact?

While there are details here and there with the new provider there is
some data that is totally missing, for example, maps for many Mexico
cities are gone, take for example Hermosillo, Sonora. Google used to
have a very up to date map of the city, now there is two or tree
streets that don't event exists anymore.

This is a complete loss, and google was the only who had decent maps
of the area. Unfortunately Mexico doesn't even appears in the
supported country lists of TeleAtlas, such a shame.

Subject: Re: More information on Maps data update
Adam, thank you for the additional information on Tele Atlas and
Google Maps. My home address was affected by the switch to this
mapping vendor - they show my address incorrectly about 1/2 mile away
(it affects all addresses for a 2-block span on my street). I spent
many months getting the data corrected with NavTeq, and now I'm
starting over. I submitted the corrections to Tele Atlas, and they are
now at the "we are working on it" stage. Unfortunately, once they
correct the problem it is still many months until Google Maps shows
the updated maps.

I have edited me address location on Google Maps (Edit - Move Marker).
But the move is about 1/2 mile so it needs some sort of approval
before it will show up as it is over 200 meters. I made the edit over
a month ago, and when I search for my address it still shows up
incorrectly. I checked "show history" today, and it appears someone
else made an edit to move the marker for that address back to the
original incorrect position! It certainly isn't someone that knows the
area that made that edit. How can I communicate with the "approvers of
the edits" for Google Maps to explain that my address edit is correct,
and should be approved?

Thank you.

Gary

You may have updated but you also changed street names.  My street -
Seneca Drive - in Las Cruces, NM has been changed to Parham.  The
street due west of us now has no name and the street beyond that is
also now nameless.    I have sent the information to Teleatlas per
your directions and have heard nothing from them.  Looking on their
map my street doesn't even exist.  At least you USED to have it.  I
don't know who you listened to that made you change this but I wish
you'd change it back.

The street at the far east end of Mohegan is SENECA DRIVE,  west of
that is MOJAVE DRIVE, and west of that is GILA TRAIL.  The road at the
south end of Mojave and Gila is ONEIDA DRIVE.  If you could get these
put back on the map it would be appreciated by the people who live
here.

Just for the record, when Mages, Akers and Edgewood we first put in
the name for the road to the east of these was to be Parham.  But the
developer named the road Seneca Drive.  I would rather use Google Maps
over MapQuest but will have to go to Mapquest if you don't change the
name of my street back so that I can get directions and others can
find me on the map before visiting.

Thank you,

mj

the Tele Atlas site, State Highway 29 points to the proper road

Here's the problem I have. The post by Adam states that Google Maps now
uses the same one as the GM API. However, that does not appear to be
the case. Also, what data does the business listing map use? It seems
to use the same as the API, which is not the same as Google Maps. Here
is my example, and one that is a problem for my organization:

On this page, the business is located right next to Independence,
which is incorrect (this is the same as what is pulled up using the
API):

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=2109+W+Parker+Rd,+Ste+728,+plano...

On this page, it is next to Custer, which is CORRECT:

http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&q=2109+W+Parker+Rd,+Ste+728,+plano,...

I don't get it.  My address has shown up on Google Maps or years and
now it's gone because they found a new provider?  My street and
address has been here for over 10 years and it does not show up?  Also
when you look a the map and the satellite at the same time, the map is
off by about a third of a mile.  On the old maps it was only off by a
few hundred feet.

Someone sold them a bag of crap on these new maps.
