Subject: Business listing categories
Hi,

I've listed my farm shop business (farm shop butcher) in LBC months
ago and have customised a my map. The closest listing in LBC is Retail
- butchers so I've used this and others. When I search in google maps
for farm shops I don't appear and the listed farm shops it returns
show a category listing of Farm Shop or Pick Your Own with a second
category of Butchers (I don't appear in that either). Where's google
getting this category listing from? Anyone know how I can get farm
shop and butchers listing in google maps?

Thanks in advance for any help
.
Cheers
Jane

I have a few hunches, but you should start by disclosing your business
name and location.

Hi,

It would help wouldn't it! The only problem is this discussion then
shows up in SERPs for the business name. My website's here: http://www.frowey.com
- my google maps listing is under Frowey Farm Shop. My listing has
Buckinghamshire as the county and uses the only category listings that
are available ie butcher, business to business etc. There is no farm
shop category although other farm shops are showing in google maps
under a farm shop category? However, if I search in google maps for
Frowey Farm Shop is brings up an entry that doesn't show the county as
Bucks but in business centre the listing has the county. If you click
through it shows two user created content items, one mine and one
entered by one of our stockists - they both show different forms of
the address and content descriptions that differ from my original
created in the business centre. You'll see that I've added google maps
to my website (contact us), a while back this stopped working until I
edited the source link and it now pulls through the user generated
content rather than the business centre description.

I don't appear in either farm shops bucks, farm shops milton keynes or
farm shops buckinghamshire but if you search for the explicit name,
there I am.

The more I look at it the more I lose the plot.

Hi
I was wondering if you solved your problem - as i have an almost
identical  issue with the listing of my cake decorating business.
Others locally appear to be listed in the cake makers & decorators
category quite clearly, but when I try to find and enter my business
in it, the category it does not exist!

Thanks but I have. I'll take another look because I originally created
custom categories for my entry understanding that the US driven
business center doesn't include all listings that I assume Google
imports from business directory purchases. I'd really like to know
what directories are used as source for the UK maps business listings.
I'm guessing that 99% of the businesses under the farm shop category
that interested me in the UK Google Maps didn't enter their entry
through the business centre but were lucky enough to be imported by
Google without any effort on their part!! Frustrating.

Thanks for the pointer.

Cheers

YES! Hadn't checked the maps listing for a few days and I now appear
in the relevant map search listings. What'll bug me now is I don't
know why I do now and I didn't before??! If Google's revisited the
categories - thank you.

Cheers

We cannot create categories.  We can suggest new ones, but we cannot
create them.  So I do not know what you mean.

Click on a listing, then click "More info".  The source will be shown in green.

Up until a few weeks ago it was true that we couldn't create new categories.
However, thanks to your many request, and to our Local Business Center team,
you can now enter free form categories for your business in your Local
Business Center account.
