Subject: Google Maps Updates
Greetings once again Google Maps folks,

I wanted to fill you in on some Google Maps updates in case you
haven't already noticed.  First, you can perform all types of searches
using the single search box at the top of the page. If you're looking
for a business in a specific location, just type in the kind of
business you're looking for, and the area you'd like to find it.  For
example, you might enter "pizza San Jose, CA" or "hotels Los Angeles,
CA".  You can also zoom the map in to the particular location you're
interested in and enter the name or type of business.

If you're simply searching for a specific address, just enter it into
the search box and click "Search Maps."

Second, the "Get Directions" link is now in the left panel, right
underneath the Google Maps logo. You can still add destinations and
easily plot reverse directions. You'll also notice a drop-down menu
that allows you to select directions by car or by foot. Click "Show
options" to see additional features.

Finally, you can collapse the left panel by clicking on the double
arrow ( << ) that appears in the upper left-hand corner of the map
view.

Let me know if you have any questions!

Happy Mapping,
Maps Guide Brian

How do you reorder destinations in the new interface?

You used to be able to drag the destinations around in the left panel
(esp. if you collapsed each 'segment' so could see the destinations
all at once) - both options how seem to be missing?

Also the reverse option doesn't appear if there are more than one destination.

As a minor point somewhere along the line the small blowup map in the
popups when clicking points has gone - a shame.

Will this you bring back this ability?

Also, the driving miles & estimated drive time have also gone missing
when searching multiple destinations.  This is something I have been
using daily for travel.  Would have been nice to have a "try the new
beta version" so I could stay on the previous version.  All of the
issues mentioned on this group are ones I consider vital to Google
Maps.

Apparently, this update results in a major loss of functionality --
functions that are very important in everyday use.

I hope that this is only temporary.  Otherwise, I'd much prefer to go
back to the previous version.

That reminds me of something.   When Google fixes this current
problem, it'd be da hizzy if they added an "Optimize Route" feature
(similar to what MS Streets & Trips has had for years).

That Optimize feature automatically reorders the intermediate stops on
your route so that your travel time between the start and end points
is the most time-efficient.

Thanks to everyone for your feedback.

Don't worry...you'll still be able to drag destinations in the left
panel. The only difference is you'll use the little green circles in
the "launcher" area where you input each address.   I understand that
this functionality isn't working properly for everyone, and I've
escalated these issues to the appropriate parties. They're taking a
look to find out what's going on. I'll keep you posted.

Stay tuned for an update.  I appreciate your patience.

I appreciate you all being so on top of the user feedback.  It
certainly calms down one of my two big fears.

Like Pugasm asks, will the segment times/distances feature be
returning?  Coupled with the drag and drop of destinations, it made
figuring out stops and locations so much easier.

Thanks Brian for on top of all the feedback being left here.  My last
post with the Microsoft comment in it was not intended to be so
bratty.  My bad on that.  I just feel like the changes don't appear,
at first, to be actual improvements to the functionality and/or
interface design.  I have always felt like changes made by Google to
their services were improvements, not just a change.  It appears that
functionality has been removed and that's what is bothering me.  Not
being demanding or feeling deserving.

Two suggestions for improvements from the previous 'version' of
Maps:

1) when dragging & dropping/rearranging destinations in a multi-route
map, keep the destinations un-expanded with the new route.  Allow the
user to expand each route as needed.  It keeps the routes concise in
view.

2) when using the "Send" feature, make the tab focus in the "To"
field.  Even using IE as a browser I have to click on the "To" field
to start typing.  Yes, it's not a huge amount of effort to click here,
but it keeps the page's flow, keeps in Google's efforts to design it's
tools with the keyboard in focus and not the mouse first.

keep up the great work!

My wish list would include Ryan's suggestion:

"1) when dragging & dropping/rearranging destinations in a multi-route
map, keep the destinations un-expanded with the new route.  Allow the
user to expand each route as needed.  It keeps the routes concise in
view."

Also nice would be an optional "Optimize Route" function, as described
in my earlier posting, above.

/Just saying.

Came across another one with the new interface:

Now that the business search and regular map search are combined into
one search box, the cached/saved searches don't function when
searching for a business, hotel, etc.  For example:

typing "hotel" and then the city --or-- address does seem to be more
streamlined at first thought....however, now that it's all one box I
can't type "hotel" and then use a saved search address since the text
of the box now includes additional content.  It seems to be a way
better process when it was one box for the object of the search
(hotel, business, etc) and another for the location/address.  That
way, the address/location fox can function with saved addresses.

Anyone else have thoughts on this?

Maybe I missed it somewhere else (I didn't expect to read for 20
minutes, and join the group to learn about all the updates, and lost
functionality), but when entering an additional destination will it
remember my saved locations and bring up possible options.  I used to
be able to type "home" and I had my address in three characters.  This
currently isn't happening when I add a destination.

I am glad we will be able to reorder.

Thanks, Paul

Last Friday my code worked beautifully and today I'm getting this

I viewed the source of the web page and the name of the button is
still the same, but I have been getting this error all day. I have
similar functions for another web site that continues to work
wonderfully. It is only the Google site generating the error.

The code leading up to that command is:
'Copy address to Google Maps and get the directions
    Dim IEapp As Object
    Dim strPassword As String
    Dim strUserName As String
    Dim strURL As String
    Dim strAddress As String
    Dim strParsedAddress As String

of any directional designators

    strURL = "http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d"

    Set IEapp = CreateObject("InternetExplorer.Application")
    With IEapp
        .Visible = True
        '.FullScreen = True
        .Navigate strURL
    End With

    IEapp.Document.all("d_sub").Click

I use this code to research dozens of routes in which employees can
walk or ride bicycles to work rather than drive. It is important to
have this automation working for us.

Greetings,

I am viewing the new layout for maps.google.com.  I do not like the
changes for several major reasons:

1. I can no longer collapse the directions in order to get a simple
overview of the milage/time calculations.

2. I can no longer click and drag destinations as my route changes or
as I wish to revise my driving itinerary.

3. The point to point distance and time are missing for destinations
within an itinerary.

I also use maps.google.com daily.

I drive to a multiple of destinations each day and revising my route
with this new layout means a great deal of additional typing and/or
cut and pasting.

I now have 13 destinations loaded.  I request that the previous
version be reinstated.

Thank you,
Dominick
