(Well, I guess the subject line gave a way the suspense. But
definitely still worth the drum roll!)
A lot of you have been asking for these for a while now, and your
persistent feedback has paid off. After getting directions, simply
click "Walking" at the top of the left panel. Just like driving
directions, you can click and drag the purple line if there's a
specific route you want to take. Keep in mind that walking directions
are in Beta. Also, please use caution when walking in areas you're not
familiar with.
One thing that needs to be added is an option to set a pace in
'minutes:seconds per mile/km'.
Another great feature that can be added is mile/km marks at even
distances, like every 1 mile/km or 0.5 mile/km.
All runners will greatly appreciate both features!
Thanks!

This is a very exciting feature. I guess you will be adding further
considerations about where it is pleasant to walk, etc., as data
becomes available.
One issue I noticed right away is that some of the pedestrian
crossings of the East River in New York City are not included -- in
particular, the Queensboro (59th St.) bridge is considered auto-only.
Although the pedestrian spans of the Brooklyn and Williamsburg bridges
are included, the access ramps are not -- effectively making those
bridges auto-only as well.
Please feel free to send me a private e-mail if you need a more
detailed test case for any of these issues.
Since a lot of your data is from Navteq and TeleAtlas and they are
focussed on car transport - how do you intend to fix the issues of
data accuracy re: walking?
Around my area there are a lot of parks and walkways that are not used
in the beta.
Do you have a page where people can put in grid locations of walkways
that are not shown on the map?
Even with this issue, it is an excellent idea.

Doug

I have the same concern as Doug, basically. I realize it's just in
beta, but I have some suggestions I'd really like to see implemented.
It'd be great if there were some way of selecting an area and saying
this place is okay to walk, bike, take your dog, bbq, etc. It'd be
neato if you could click on a park, see all the services (child's play
area, wading pool, tennis courts, picnic tables, bbqs, gazebos, etc.)
for it and reserve it, if possible (for weddings, work functions,
etc.), through the appropriate city website.
I'd also love to see something similar to what you have for the
transit link - alternate routes. Specifically, instead of directness,
it'd be nice to have an option to pick more scenic, quiet or safer
routes. If there were some way of letting locals rate the different
aspects of routes and public facilities or leave comments/warnings, I
think that'd be a real bonus.
I think it's splendid that Google is taking the focus off the car and
providing directions for other means of getting around. Perhaps you
could set up something for car poolers as well.
I'm also looking forward to having something similar for bicycle/
recreation paths.
I'm curious; how do I contribute? Could I, say, bike down the paths
with a gps recorder, then send the data back to Google somehow?
I think it'd be fun if there were a way to see all the geocaches in an
area, ie. the cacher would place a circle on a map that could be small
as a park or large as a province, rate the difficulty or type of
challenge and provide the details of how to find it, then you could
filter out what you want. eg. Everything in my city that shouldn't
take more than two hours to find.
I look forward to the time when more information will be available for
outdoor enthusiasts.
I see that Walking Directions is now active in Google Maps directions.
This is great. It looks like it still just uses roads as paths,
obviously this should eventually use walking paths & footbridges when
possible.
I'd like to know how I can help, is there anything we can do to
suggest or point out paths that are intended for walking? I've started
making a few lines in My Maps and making them public. Is there a way
to tag these to be picked up by Google to get incorporated into your
directions so they'll be used? Should they be drawn to connect to the
ends of your street lines?

It looks like the folks at http://www.bycycle.org/ have it figured
out. Their directions include things like footbridges & bike paths
that don't get used in the normal Google Maps directions - how did
they do that?
