Stickied this post, as Google Sky is really cool and the team that
released it worked really hard. (I just stopped by their desks and
they look pretty tired).
Check out the sliders beneath the maptypecontrol - great UI for
changing transparency of tile layers.

Awesome! 15 years ago I was using these clunky systems which were
difficult to use and looked like Pacman on acid.

It's available now under Apache Licence 2.0
http://www.google.com/sky/slider/js/slider.js It would be fairly easy to write your own using GDraggableObject (unless you need the mousewheel and keystroke support). Because it was written before GDraggableObject, it includes all its own dragging code.

Google Sky is simply a Maps API mashup, and in fact the code for it is
not obfuscated. So you're welcome to browse through it and see how
it's done (though it's not guaranteed to be easy to read :).
