Subject: Gray box, no map
I'm only getting a gray box, with controls and Google logo/copyright
in ie7.
Works in ff, so what is missing that is causing ie to have an "I'm not
listening, la, la, la" moment?

You have spaces in front of your Doctype... which means
IE is probably ignoring it

Open the file layoutStyles.css with your favourite text editor and
comment out the second line (it should then look like the following):
/* @import url(iehacks.css); */
