Q: Why won't Picasa use my native email program?
The interface for starting a native Linux email program isn't
standardized, and often doesn't work.
We do our best to launch the proper email client, but there are only a
few combinations that we've found to work. Those include using
Evolution under Gnome, and using KMail under KDE, but only when KMail
is already up and running in the background.
We'll try to use Mozilla-Thunderbird, but most versions of Thunderbird
have a bug which prevents them from receiving the subject line, body,
and attachment that Picasa passes to it.
You can customize this behavior yourself to use exactly the email
client you like by editing the picasa/desktop/picasa-hook-
email.sh.template file on your disk. You'll need to follow the
instructions in that file in order to customize your installation of
Picasa for your desktop.
However, I found the instructions in the template file somewhat less
than crystal clear :
< hook-email >-----------------------------------------------------
#
# picasa-hook-email.sh
#
# This script is passed a command line that looks like this:
#
# <to_address>?subject=<subject>&cc=<ccs>&bcc=<bccs>&body=<body
# text>&attach=<path to attachments>
#
# If this script exits with a status of 0, then Picasa will
# assume that you have handled the request, and will not perform
# any further processing.
#
# To use this file:
# copy the picasa-hook-email.sh.template file to
# some place in your path, and name it picasa-hook-email.sh.
# Then edit the script to add the functionality you need
To just where is the above file to be copied and how is it to be
edited in order to be able to choose to use my Gmail account ? As it
is now, I have to go through Evolution in order to send an attached
file using the Email option. I'd be most grateful for any
suggestions....

Yes, I have encountered the same problem.
Everything works OK, but I am not able to connect to web photos and
Gmail account.
It simply shows error message, and info about trying latter.
1) Start Evolution
2) Open Edit-Preferences
3) Choose GMail Account, click "Edit"
4) Choose tab "sending Email"
5) Click "Server requires authentification" on "Server configuration"
6) Enter your Gmail username
7) Click "Remember password" if you want evolution to do so
Try it and see if it doesn't work for you as well !...

I'm copying it here. Good printing.
Hi,
I have this very problem with the picasa linux version installed in a
32 bits chroot on a 64bits laptop. I have worked it out.
It happens that wine in order to print needs libcups. The ubuntu
feisty deb (32 bits) for the 64bits computers installs picassa inside
a root that uses libraries from /usr/lib32, but then it doesn't
installs the corresponding libcups of 32 bits in this chroot.
So in Ubuntu Feisty 64 bits:
1) Download from the ubuntu repositories the following 386 packages
(remember that we need to copy some libs inside /usr/lib32 and they
need to be 32 bits libraries)
libcupsys2_1.2.8-9ubuntu8_i386.deb
libgnutls13_1.4.4-3build1_i386.deb
libtasn1-3_0.3.6-2build1_i386.deb
libgpg-error0_1.4-2build1_i386.deb
2) Do not try to install them with gdebi nor with any other package
installer. Open any one of them with fille-roller.
3) Inside any deb you will find a data.tar.gz. Open it and you will
find /usr/lib/lib*
4) Extract /usr/lib/lib* to /usr/lib32, and thats all.
Note:
These libcups and its actual dependencies. In the future this could
not work if more dependencies added. What I did to know the exact
dependencies was running picasa the following way, after installed
libcups
LP_PRELOAD=/usr/lib32/libcups.so.2 wine path_to_Picasa2.exe
Good luck.
I think this means you need to install the 32 bit libssl packages.
See http://forum.jungledisk.com/viewtopic.php?t=178
this indeed solve all problems with connection to web album
for debian:
wget http://security.debian.org/pool/updates/main/o/openssl/libssl0.9.7_0.9.7e-3sarge4_i386.deb
for ubuntu:
wget http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/o/openssl/libssl0.9.7_0.9.7g-1ubuntu1_i386.deb
for both:
aptitude install install ia32-libs ia32-libs-gtk linux32 lib32asound2
mkdir /tmp/pic
dpkg-deb -x libssl0.9.7_0.9.7e-3sarge4_i386.deb /tmp/pic/
cp /tmp/pic/usr/lib/* /usr/lib32/ -a
dpkg-deb -x libssl0.9.7_0.9.7e-3sarge4_i386.deb /tmp/pic/
I got the following response :
dpkg-deb: could not read the archive
"libssl0.9.7_0.9.7e-3sarge4_i386.deb": The file or catalogue does not
exist.
What am I doing wrong and where do I go from here ?...

you have to change name:
if you downloaded for ubuntu wget
http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/o/openssl/libssl0.9.7_0.9.7g-1ubuntu1_i386.deb
you will need to extract with different filename:
dpkg-deb -x libssl0.9.7_0.9.7g-1ubuntu1_i386.deb /tmp/pic/
then
cp /tmp/pic/usr/lib/* /usr/lib32/ -a
picasa
and that is all

Many thanks, Mathew, your new instructions worked like a charm. I
hadn't realised that the first file name in your previous instructions
referred to the Debian, rather than the Ubuntu download. I can now, to
my great satisfaction, send photos as attachments using my Gmail
account directly, rather than taking a detour over Evolution....
One further query - in your letter on 1 June you comment on dank's
suggestion
See http://forum.jungledisk.com/viewtopic.php?t=178
saying that «this indeed solve all problems with connection to web
album» and then following up with instructions regarding downloading
and installation of certain files. While as I mentioned above, after
following, mutatis mutandi, your instructions, I can now send photos
from Picasa (which by the way, I can access using
Applications→Grafics→Picasa ; i e, without using a terminal) as
attachments using my Gmail account, I still don't have access to my
web albums when booted up till Ubuntu. Have I misunderstood you, or is
there in fact something I can do to gain access to these albums ? I
should very much like to avoid having to boot into XP in order to do
so !...
