Hi,
In Windows-version of Picasa I could upload photos to my online album
by clicking on button near buttons 'Print', 'Email' 'Collage' itd. In
Linux version I can see this buttons, but there's no button to upload
images to my internet album
How can I do that?
Thank everyone for help :)

You either need to install a windows version under Wine or wait for
Google to put out a version. The official version of Picasa doesn't
support web albums at this time.

I'm a bit annoyed myself that Google's done such a great job porting
this to Linux and has let it go by the wayside now. It's quite a
disappointment...

Yeah, me too. What a bunch of maroons! Oh, wait...

Truth is we've been diligently working through a bunch
of small issues for some time now with a bunch of beta
testers. At some point soon I'm going to go "I don't care what
one beta tester in Lower Northeast Kensington says, it's time to
release!"

It is possible to download pictures to Picasa webfolder, but you have
to use another programs:
1. Please install a special add-on to Firefox, it's name is:
FireUploader.
2. You can download pictures using F-Spot, option: Export to Picasa

Here's another user saying it will be great once I can upload albums
from my linux box. I do most of my photo stuff on linux, since the
tools are better, but currently I have to switch over to my windows
box whenever I want to update an album. It will be an improvement if I
can just do everything in linux. Thanks!

That is pretty much the reason I stopped testing with the beta version
of Picasa for Linux. There still isn't a viable easy way to upload to
web albums. When they decide to add that, I'll pick it back up
again. For now, I'm on Vista when using Picasa.

Or you know what would be really useful, would be some kind of release
schedule, so I don't sit around here like an idiot wondering when the
album functionality is going to be available, and whether I should
continue to wait for it or try to use some other tool in the meantime.

I am running into the same problem at you all. I am on Ubuntu and have
Picassa. I love them both but I am very frustrated that this
functionality is not supported. I am very much looking forward to
resolution.

Please keep us updated!

nicabod,

There's supposed to be a new version coming out for Linux very soon (its release is described as "by the end of summer")... so hopefully we'll all get to enjoy that functionality and more, sometime in the next few days, assuming it's on schedule!

This is the only must-have feature missing on the Linux version! I´m
counting the days to have it!

Ah, OK, you mean astronomical summer, or in other words, 23 Sep 2007
0951 UTC (0551 EDT). I had assumed you meant the traditional end of
summer, or Labor Day, 03 Sep 2007. Thanks for the info and we will all
be excited to see the new Picasa.

I was just referring to Summer as it is understood in the one little
part of the world where Google (and the Internet) originated and where
its headquarters and primary developers are based.

As far as I can tell, summer goes from the 1st of December to the 28th
(or 29th) of February. Always has in this country and probably always
will.

03-Sep-2007? What has the third day of spring got to do with the end
of summer?

Half the world is in the southern hemisphere, a lot of the rest of the
world, thankfully, is *not* in the United States of America, can we
try for dates that are understandable for all of us?

hi
i don't understand that: yestarday i've downloaded "normal" picasa 2.7
for windows and installed it with wine (which actually works quite
well, web albums, too)... now, when i look under "help/info" it says
"picasa verison 2.7 (build 37.2900, 0) for LINUX"... how is this
possible?! does wine replace the os information?!

WINE does not try hard to hide itself from applications that use it,
so Picasa has not problems with detecting that it runs with WINE.
Windows Picasa has shown that 'for Linux' for a long time now. I'd
guess parts of 2.2 Linux Picasa customization were left in Windows
Picasa and show up that way.

Yes, Picasa knows when it's running under Wine, as opposed to regular
Windows, and has some modifications to accommodate differences (or
different expectations).

What, you missed the rain last night and today? Just perfect for ruining

OMG, I chose Friday to take the bus to work. It took an HOUR
to move the one mile between Bundy and the 405. That
rain really threw people for a loop. But it was all hot and summery
inside the bus :-)

Hi all,

I am in Ubuntu Dapper... do I simply download the "picasa*current*exe"
file from Google, double-click the icon and it will be installed
perfectly under WINE? (yes, i have the latest working version of
WINE.)

If not, how do I actually install Picasa for Windows in Linux?

I need to use Web Albums too!! Thanks for advice...

Aen,

For the Linux version, go to:

http://picasa.google.com/linux/download.html

...and download the .deb file, then run it as usual to install.

If you want to run the current Windows version.  Download the .exe, launch it and Wine should handle the install.  Or type in a terminal, "wine xxxx.exe".

Either way, you should be fine.  :-)

Thanks Mark and all.

I found out that if you install the "latest" version of Picasa for
Windows under Linux WINE, you will NOT get the latest version with Web
Album upload capability.

When I tried to check for online updates, I get a "Not authenticated"
type of error message. You may too.

So, you have to google for Picasa version 2.7 and download the .exe
file somewhere (I think I found mine on MajorGeek or something) and
install that file instead.

Now, I am uploading to my Web Albums in Linux, whoohoo!!! : )

Hi guys. Any news about uploading to web albums feature ?
Or just maybe schedule is already done?
Really, very nice (and probably one of the most useful) option. When
we'll get it under linux?
Maybe some guys from Google here? Tell us plz! =)

Booyaah! A work around has been found!

I'm using Ubuntu - Fiesty Fawn.

First install Picasa for Linux. (You all probably have it installed
already).
Then install Picasa for windows using the latest WINE you get the
WebAlbums button. (Just download the Installer for windows and use
WINE to open it)

By default Picasa for Linux installs under: "/opt/picasa/wine/drive_c/
Program Files/Picasa2"
By default Picasa for Windows installs under: "~/.wine/drive_c/Program
Files/Picasa2"

Ok. So all you need to do now is copy the Windows installation of
Picasa over to the Linux Installation.
Its a good idea to rename the original Picasa for Linux installation
folder to something else, for backup purposes.

So. Copy: "~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Picasa2"
over to: "/opt/picasa/wine/drive_c/Program Files/Picasa2"

Launch Picasa for Linux and you should have the WebAlbums option!

YAY! :)

Now... on a related but slightly different note...
Does anyone know how to explicity tell "Picasa for Linux" to Import
new buttons?
On "Picasa for Windows" it seems you can import buttons explicitly by
calling Picasa in this manner:

"c:\Program Files\Picasa2\Picasa2.exe
picasa://importbutton/?url=http://www.webkinesis.com/fbpicasa/facebook.pbf"
(This will add the Facebook photo uploader button.. very similar to
the Picasaweb Webalbums)

Can ANYONE please help me to find out how to force Picasa for Linux to
do the same thing? Or is it even possible?
It would be really handy to know, because from there you could pretty
much add any button to Picasa for Linux and Bobs your Uncle... Picasa
for Linux becomes "the shit" :)

Thanks!

Double Booya!

Ok.. so I was a lil bit lazy when I asked for help about importing
buttons.

Here is how you can import the Facebook picasa button with Picasa for
Linux (and probably any other button)

In order to explicity tell Picasa to import a button upon start up,
you have to call it using its 'full destination path'. Unfortunately
the Linux batch script that calls picasa does not use the fully
quantified address path... so.. here is what you do if you want
Facebook functionality in your Picasa for Linux!

open /opt/picasa/bin/picasa for editing
scroll all the way down until you find this line:
exec "$PIC_BINDIR"/wrapper license.exe.so /gate Picasa2 "$*"
Change it to this:
exec "$PIC_BINDIR"/wrapper license.exe.so /gate "c:\Program Files
\Picasa2\Picasa2.exe" "$*"
Save the file, open a terminal window and type this:

picasa picasa://importbutton/?url=http://www.webkinesis.com/fbpicasa/facebook.pbf

Boom shakalaka! You can now import the Facebook button!

I'm a happy chappy. Not much need to use Picasa through WINE
anymore :)
Enjoy

Yes, this will make installing the windows version completely
unnecessary, but I cannot seem to get it to work. I run Ubuntu Linux
7.10, and I simply installed the Linux version, edited the /opt/picasa/
bin/picasa file like you said, and executed the command "picasa
picasa://importbutton...", but no go. It brings up regular old Picasa
with the import from camera dialog (?). I thought that it may have
something to do with Linux Picasa having no "Buttons" folder, so I
made one, but the result is the same.

I know basically nothing about the way Picasa works, but if it's
bringing up the import from camera dialog when I start it with that
command, something isn't working right. Any ideas, sir?

It sounds like maybe you tried the old webalbum workaround. If that's
the case, please try the official beta build instead:

http://picasa.google.com/linux/download.html#27beta

If there are still problems, make sure you delete or move all the old
~/.picasa and /opt/picasa files, since the workaround leaves things in
an unknown state, then reinstall the beta.
