Menu and button text not visible

This program is impossible to use as it installed on my Ubuntu 8.10
machine. Right from the T.O.S. the buttons were blank. I got through
that by guessing, only to find the entire menubar is blank on the main
screen.Sometimes when I click some text appears on the button, but it
isn't legible and it immediately disappears. Please help.

What version of Picasa do you have installed? What locale are you
using?

I had issues like this after turning on compositing_manager in
metacity, turning it back off fixed the issue. Not sure if this
applies for you or not.
