Heads up! We'll soon be changing the behavior of minimized gadgets on iGoogle.
What are 'minimized' gadgets? On iGoogle, http://www.google.com/ig, all gadgets have a title bar with a [-] icon at the top right corner. When you click on it, the gadget content collapses to a minimized form where only the title bar remains visible. When one of your homepage tabs contains a lot of gadgets (> 10), minimizing the ones that aren't frequently used can help unclutter the page and preserve precious vertical real estate.
What's the change in behavior? Currently, minimized gadgets are rendered as the page loads even when they're not visible. This increases overall page load time and can cause errors in browsers which don't handle hidden iframes well. The behavior will be changed such that minimized gadgets are not loaded until you un-minimize them. The pages should load faster, and there'll be fewer issues with hidden iframes.
For example, if you have 20 gadgets on your homepage and 8 are minimized, only the remaining 12 un-minimized gadgets will be rendered as opposed to 20.
We don't anticipate any issues related to this change, but we'd like to hear your feedback. Please let us know if you believe this change will cause any issues for your gadgets, and we can work with you to alleviate them.

It's great to have heads up on this :-) Sounds like a useful change. But I have a problem scerario for you. Say the minimized gadget affects the page in some way, perhaps in the case of an inlined gadget which say adds a corner bookmark, change the columns widths or page layout, e.g. custom Google logo gadget or my skins gadget. Users frequently minimize gadgets and still expect them to do their job. It sounds like this feature addition may just have adverse effects on a particular subset of gadgets - by effectively disabling them unless they are kept in the maximized state.
Have I understood you correctly?

That is a very good point -- the change would only affect gadgets which render in iframes, and not inlined gadgets. This would allow gadgets such as your skins gadget to continue working while minimized.
Thank you, Gordy

I have a gadget with is rendered in iFrames and it is loaded even when it is minimized. The problem is that Firefox gives me an error when the iGoogle page is loaded:

ISTR from another thread this is an ongoing problem from the analytics tracking code. If you were to inline your gadget , you could certainly determine whether or not your gadget was minimized before calling the code... but you don't want to go inlining unless there's a really good reason to.
Hopefully this will get fixed soon.

Is the new title-bar menu related to this change? The [+]/[-] icons have been replaced by a "Menu", with the minimize option as the FIFTH option in the menu. I would agree that not loading the gadget until it's open is better, but I don't see the point of burying the minimize button in a menu. I generally hide the least important gadgets, until I'm interested in their content.
