Whatever criteria I choose, in whatever range or ranges I choose,
whether I add new ones or subtract old ones -- the stock screener
unfailingly informs me that "No companies found."

Update!

If you search for companies only based on 'EPS' or 'beta', you will
get a handful of results. Suspiciously, these results are companies
that have 'EPS' or 'Beta' in their name or description (the EPS search
gives you Wisdomtree's earnings ETF; symbol: EPS; the beta search
returns Biogen Idec, and according to Google's capsule description:
"The Company has four products: AVONEX (interferon beta-1a)").

So it looks like they're searching the text rather than the variables.
I'm disappointed that they posted it in this form.

How do you get to this stockscreener? The URL that Onuxis provided
just takes me back to the standard Google Finance page?

When I use Google Finance, there is a link to the stock screener to
the right of the 'search finance' button. Text is "Stock Screener
New!"

It may be in limited beta or something (if so, lucky for them!)

I should note that the screener now helpfully informs me that the
range of market caps tops out at $454 billion, and the lowest market
cap is "-9223372036.85B". I find this hard to imagine, unless the US
Government went public without telling me. The screener's default
settings now yield the following results:

Company Name Symbol
PowerShares Lux Nanotech (ETF) PXN
Calamos Global Dynamic Income Fund CHW
SPDR S&P Homebuilders (ETF) XHB
SPDR S&P Biotech (ETF) XBI
SPDR S&P Semiconductor (ETF) XSD
First Trust NASDAQ Clean Edge US (ETF) QCLN

So maybe they're still improving it.

Screener appears to work now.

Screener link has now appeared on my Google Finance page just as you
described.

Everything seems to work on it. The input sliders work well and are a
quick way to set up a screen. Response is fast - particularly with
screens which produce a relatively small number of hits.

As a demonstration of an interface concept, I would say they are
moving in the right direction. Much easier to set up a screen with it
than with the Yahoo java based screener. I hope they continue to
develop it and add enough criteria that it becomes a useful screening
tool.
