This is the second time this has happened within a couple of months.
Last time I followed the instructions in another post to reinstall and
reindex which I did but now it's stopped again. I don't want to have
to do this every few weeks!
Version Google Desktop 5.8.0809.23506-en-GB-pb
Total searchable items 234,689 28 Dec
Emails 17,207 28 Dec
Chats 0 -
Web history 5,740 28 Dec
Files 211,742 28 Dec
I have 184Gb of free disk space!
Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks
Clive
PS I have trawled through the forums looking for an answer but didn't
find anything.
The same has happened to me dozens of times. Reinstalls don't fix the
problem (except, perhaps, temporarily).
I'm concerned about Google's other businesses (as a stockholder) given
the complete lack of customer support or response to this wide-spread
and ongoing problem.

I am concerned that after a couple of days following posting the only
responses have been people with the same problem. I had hoped for some
suggestions to resolve this issue!!
Does anyone know if there is any way to get proper support from Google
on problems like this?
Clive
PS I am sorry you other guys are having the same problem.

I thought I'd found out how to get help from Google on this problem...
"If you've found a new problem that's not listed on our Known Issues
page, let us know and we'll investigate"
Alas, no, it just brings you right back to this forum here. It is
alleged that Google support team actually read and respond to these
messages! Is that fact or fantasy??
Here's hoping for a positive response I really love Google desktop and
want to get it to work properly for me. If not does anyone now of a
reasonable alternative (but please don't swear and say Microsoft)

Some suggestions:
* There *is* a newer version out that you probably want to try
installing.
* For those who haven't tried completely rebuilding the index, now's
the time. I know of no way to re-kick start the index once it has
stopped working.
* For those who already tried the previous and encountered this
problem again, you may want to re-evaluate what utility programs
you're running on your machine that may corrupt the index or erase
Google Desktop registry values. Index will usually stop updating
either when it has become corrupted, you have unwisely ran a third-
party registry cleaning program/removed registry keys willy-nilly, or
some destructive event has happened to your index (virus/malware
recovery, hard reboot/blue screen) etc.
* And of course, a quick goof check - open Desktop Options and make
sure you have indexing enabled :)
Not sure if this will help any of you, but there's basically nothing
else anyone can do for you, until you discover the cause. Maybe
there's a common factor between your computers that you can discuss to
get closer to what's going on with your machines?

Interesting that I stopped indexing email on 6 January, and I am
pretty sure that was the day my IT deparrtment had me run "CCleaner"
because of some general performance issues - and so lots of registery
updates done during that process.

I downloaded the version from the website the day (or thereabouts)
before I posted so unless there one sneaked in after then I probably
have it.

If we knew how the index could get corrupted that would help greatly.
However I don't run registry cleaners/remove registry keys willy-
nilly/
or have viruses or spyware!!

Done

How can we do that? If Google provided an index checking tool that
would help but as it is we are shooting
completely in the dark.
I don't expect it would be that difficult for the authors to write
some diagnostics to try and
ascertain exactly what is wrong with the indexes/indices and then
hopefully know how to fix.
As far as I can see this is not an uncommon problem but there is no
record of Google being
interested in the problem or asking for people to send in stuff for
further investigation.,
so they can try
Come on Google take some notice of your customers!

Mine stopped 12/27; does anyone know if there was any sort of MS
update during the 12/27-12/28 time frame?? We're using XP at work
although other users report not having this problem.

OK it's telling me the latest entry of emails and web history is 27th
Jan - yesterday - so it looks like its stopped indexing again.
# items Time of newest item

Following GeorgeB's suggestion I am trying to find out what stopped it
to me the most obvious thing is to look at the time last modified on
the files in the index directory and see if it relates to anything in
the event log. So here is the list:

Does any of that help move us forward in any way?
(Of course it would help to know whether some of these files are
updated every minute or every day!)
Does anyone else with a problem have any similar matching events?
if you've got this far thanks for your patience and perseverence!!

More firewall BS. Google desktop stopped indexing
my Gmail on 12-31-2007 and there were no alterations
in my firewall or naything else.
Everything I've read on this subject is just more BS
to get around the fact that Google goofed when they
allowed each new person to invite 50 new people
but didn't realize that many of us would use that
for our own purposes, making numerous gmail
accounts for ourselves since Gmail is not created
to set up folders where we could keep the gmails
we wanted in a specific folder for easy locating.
The real reason that we can no longer index gmail
is because Google is running out of space on their
servers and don't want to pony up for more. This all
happened near the time Google took a big hit on
their stock.
Now which came first? Did the stock drop because
Google's desktop service for Gmail was discontinued
or did indexing Gmail stop due to a drop in Google's
stock?
I'm sure I will get another bunch of BS answers
none of which is helping any of us and the Google
I bought into is no longer the Google I was promised
and is now just like any other email service so why
stay with Gmail.
I'll soon be going back to Outllok Express where I
can set up all my folders to search with a little bit
more difficulty but compared with not being able
to locate the emails I exchanged with someone
a year or more ago, I'll be back in email heaven,
especially since I'm approaching senility and/or
alzheimer's.
For you youngsters out there in lala land you've
just seen that all business is just show business,
as full of illusions as Satan's playland.

Most of you use Google for free (we are paying as it suits us to get
the extra features) but even free accounts have tremendous rule based
sorting functionality with folders and labels. Try reading the help
screens so you can get what you haven't paid for.
What a cheek complaining about what you get for free !

looks like your dbeam file has reached the size of 4GB. This I believe
is a limit that makes the system stop.
Under FAT/FAT32 file systems 4GB is the maximum file size. NTFS should
be capable of handling bigger files.
My Google Desktop stopped indexing too a week ago with dbeam file size
at 4GB. My file system is NTFS. So I assume it's Google Desktop that
can't go beyond at the moment.
If you find a workaround or a solution let me know. I'll appreciate
it.
Maybe dbeam hitting a 4GB limit is the problem.
My Google Desktop stopped indexing yet again 5 days ago, and my dbeam
file size is exactly the same as Clive's: 4,294,967,295 bytes (that's
what Properties "Size:" reports; "Size on disk:" is strangely 1 byte
more 4,294,967,296 bytes).
And 4,294,967,295 == 2^32-1, what a coincidence.
The index is on an NTFS disk (and I've used TweakGDS 1.1.3 to place it
on D drive).

You might want to ask us paranoids
who get Google for free (since we did
not know we could get it any other way)
before branding us "paranoid" and slamming
us for not paying for it, did we know we
could buy it.
Then you could politely tell us how.
How do I pay for it?
I would gladly do so since it was the
best thing for me since the wheel.
I know some people NEED to denigrate
others who are ignorant (not stupid)
of the knowledge you have to make themselves
feel superior, which only separates us and does
not bring us together to get doen what we all
would like to get done.
If you must charge us for your knowledge, so be it,
many of us (me for sure) would pay you for it.
You could even write an article for eHow.com
and make some very good coin.
Not all of us are so brilliant to "Try reading the help
screens so you can get what you haven't paid for"
since we didn’t know what Help screens you are
referring us to.
You took your precious time to spank us
why not take a little more to soothe our
wounds instead of pouring salt into the

dbeam a (large) file that is part of the index Google Desktop builds
on your system -- see Clive's (ceemjay) Jan 28 post above. Apparently
the only official way to "fix" it is to completely uninstall/reinstall
GDS, as described here:
An unofficial way to "fix" it, and which I can confirm works, is to
use 3rd-party utility TweakGDS 1.1.3 (http://desktop.google.com/ plugins/i/tweakgds.html, although I got it direct from author's site)
which allows you to delete the index and re-index without
uninstalling. (Also allows you to place the index where you want
which was the original reason I got it.)
Of course the real fix is for Google to fix their bug. I find it
astonishing that a company with Google's resources would let a
fundamental bug like this in the product's core functionality -- GDS
just SILENTLY STOPS INDEXING for heaven's sake -- go unresolved for so
long.

Add me to the list of people who seeing this behavior; didn't
correlate it to 4 GB limit until I just saw this post, but sure
enough, my dbeam file is ~4 GB as well. Ben? I just posted a new
thread before finding this one "GDS stops indexing email - Outlook
2007" tho I know realize it stops ALL indexing)...

I stumbled upon this post when trying to find the answer why GDS
stopped indexing and found the same problem.....
I checked my dbeam file and found it's size as 3.99 GB
(4,294,967,295 bytes). This definately seems to be the common thread
(at least from my point of view). Thanks for the post. Will continue
to check for solutions. Paul
