I have Comodo firewall, Avira Free anitvirus installed.
I have ~26 Firefox addons, including NoScript - but this is set to
accept all scripts from Google http://127.xxxx.
Possibly of importance, not all pages from GD result in the page load
error. E.g. if I click 'More Options' from the Options screen, that
page opens without problem.
Also, I should've mentioned I had this problem pre SP3 as well.
I tried running Firefox with a new, empty profile and the problem was
solved.
I then switched back to my default profile and started disabling
addons, a few at a time, to find the culprit. I eventually disabled
them all and cleared cache and cookies but the problem was not solved.
Wow, it sounds like you've got Firefox loaded for bear! It'd be great
if you could check a few more things with your browsers:
- If you switch your default browser to Internet Explorer (IE) or
paste these URLs directly into IE's address bar, does the same error
occur?
- If you open a new Firefox window and paste any of these URLs
directly into the address bar, do the pages open correctly?
- Are you able to open the Desktop search page from your system tray
icon? To check, click the Desktop icon (a multicolored swirl) in your
system tray and select 'Search Desktop.'
- What happens if you select 'Options,' 'About,' or 'Indexing' >
'Index Status' from the Desktop system tray icon?
- Finally, what happens if you disable all other Firefox add-ons? If
the error disappears, re-enable your add-ons one by one to see when
the error reappears.

OK. More info. Having recreated my profile completely, the problem
returned - so it was not a corrupt profile.
I narrowed it down to the about:config setting
'browser.tabs.loadDivertedInBackground', which I set from 'false' to
'true'. I need this setting to stop Firefox stealing focus.
Can this issue therefore be classified as a bug? If so, what is the
preferred bug reporting method?

I have confirmed it is related to loading the search-result page in
the background, regardless of profile settings, as follows:
- with any Firefox profile (eg brand new), do a GD search.
- Bring a second tab (with any URL) to the foreground.
- refresh the tabs while the GD search result is NOT the foreground
tab (eg right-click on the tab bar, Reload All Tabs)
Result: GD search fails with "Page Load Error" / "Failed to Connect".
I have also tested as per below (to confirm David's initial findings):
- created a new Firefox 3.0 profile;
'browser.tabs.loadDivertedInBackground' defaults to false; GD searches
work as expected.
- change this setting to true; GD searches now fail initially, but
refreshing the tab gives the expected ok result (as described above).
1. Close Google Desktop and Firefox.
2. Remove the following file (I saved it in another location just in
case) "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\components
\GoogleDesktopMozilla.dll"
3. Restart Firefox and Google Desktop and try again.
