Google Desktop version 5.5.0709.30344-en-pb does fix a problem with Outlook messages being truncated in the preview mode. However, after installing the new version of Google Desktop, Outlook 2003 .msg item won't open.
Glad to hear you're enjoying the enhanced Outlook indexing. I'm looking into these other Outlook issues however. Can you please provide steps to reproduce the problem?
Also, what MS Office/Outlook service pack do you have installed? (In Outlook, just go to "Help" > "About Microsoft Outlook.")
> Google Desktop version 5.5.0709.30344-en-pb does fix a problem with > Outlook messages being truncated in the preview mode. However, after > installing the new version of Google Desktop, Outlook 2003 .msg item > won't open.
I have the same issue as smarket. Steps to reproduce: 1. Install Google Desktop version 5.5.0709.30344-en-pb 2. Start Outlook 3. Try to open .msg file stored on hard disk OR open email as attached to an email (embedded email) and nothing happens, file is not opened.
Notes: 1. I have Outlook 2003 (11.8118.8132) SP2 2. I noticed the problem ever since I upgraded to this version, approximately 1 week ago. It worked fine with older version (not known). I uninstalled Google Desktop and verified that Outlook works correctly, msg file opens. I re-installed Google Desktop version 5.5.0709.30344-en-pb and problem is back.
Is there a way to install a previous version? I can't use GD if it won't let me open msg files or embedded emails.
Regards, Paul

Thank you all for helping us look into this issue. We've reproduced the problem, and the fix should be included in an upcoming Google Desktop release! Although we can't give you a specific date, you can keep track of all the Desktop releases by visiting this page in our Help Center:

In the mean time I have removed Google Desktop version 5.5 and reinstalled version 5.1. This version does not have the .msg file issue. You can download version 5.1 at http://desktop.google.com/previous.html

In the meantime, I suggest going to Outlook Tools Options Other Advanced Addin Mgr and unchecking GDS Outlook Addin. That allows you to open .msg attachments - at least in OL 2002. Note that the COM Addin GDS OL Toolbar can be left running. Disabling the Addin appears to stop indexing so you will want to turn it back on when you have read the attachment. MM

I am afraid you missed the point: Chris referenced a web page to keep track of GD releases. To this, I suggested this page should be associated to a feed to easily keep track of those releases, using Google Reader ;-). Chris didn't mention he would post an update to this thread when a new release would be out. And even if he might do it, this thread should surely not be the first place were this info belongs but the web page is the right place.
Good suggestion! But I went to the COM add-Ins and disabled the toolbar. AFAIK, it doesn't disable the indexing: I sent a mail to myself and it was indexed (not the most reliable test though). A .msg now opens.
I have an error message at outlook startup and the add-in manager is now empty but I didn't find any real user functionality broken yet.

I have/had same problem in Outlook 2007 Pro on Vista Business. Could not open *.msg files saved to disk, or received as attachments in email. Outlook returned error message "error with Microsoft Office Outlook messager and item previewer." I uninstalled GD v5.5.0709.30344 and the problem disappeared. Too bad. I really like GD.

I uninstalled version 5.5 and that fixed the problem, but when I try to install version 5.1 I get the message "This version of Google Desktop is already installed" "OK" and it will not install.

I am now in a situation where the mail indexing doesn't happen any more. I will have to investigate that later on...

All, I think this broken functionality is going to effect a LOT of people and should be patched ASAP. I got luckly and stumbled on this group; i was about start doing painful system restores one restore point at a time till the problem went away.... I really don't think you want all your GD users to go thru this time consuming excercise. I just assumed this was an Outlook problem at first since there's really no indication that is related to GD.
Not sure about everyone else, but I was seeing other odd issues due to this bug as well. Sometimes my message body could not be displayed in the reading pane and instead I would get a message saying that the credentials must be re-verified. Clicking back-and-fourth on messages sometimes would bring back the text back in my reading pane again.
Disabling Goolge desktop in outlook Add-in Mgr fixes all the above issues.... of course, we lose the email indexing so ideally you should revert back to the previous version of GD and re-enable the GD in add- in mgr.

I could have written the same thing. Here's hoping more noise from more disappointed users will get someone moving a bit faster.

This is driving me nuts, too! I'm lucky a google search stumbled me upon this Google Desktop bug; otherwise, I would have no idea why my Outlook is broken. I was about to ask IT to reinstall Outlook because I thought it had gotten corrupted.
I hope it gets fixed soon, also. GD has been great in helping me find emails among the thousands I have. It'd be a shame I would have to turn off my email indexing just to get msg attachments to open.

Yeah, I was having the same problem with Outlook 2003, and as soon as I turned off the GD add-in, I could open .msg files fine.
Let's get this fixed! GD Indexing adds so much functionality to Outlook, it would be a shame to have this problem keep me from using it, or at the very least make me go into the options menu every time I need to open a .msg file.
