Google desktop supports Activex controls to add to the side bar as a
panel.

To use existing activex control, select "Add/Remove panels" options and
check the "Show ActiveX Plug-ins" check box and select the activex
control desired.

If the plugin supports, it will add to the side bar.  I tested windows
media player and works fine.

I have seen many people asking for specific purpose side bar panel.
This may be a solution.
