The google team has been simply blowing me off from day one: here is
the entire substance of their first response:
---------------------------
We have investigated this issue, but because the results were
inconclusive, we're not able to provide further assistance.
---------------------------
Here is the entire substance of their second response to my further
questions, which included asking if my account still existed and how
to get it back:
--------------------------
Gmail takes the privacy and security of our users very seriously. For
this reason, we can't reveal any further information about this
account.
---------------------------
My further questions include asking them if they think I am someone
else who does not own the account or what. This one remains unanswered
after about six days.
What on earth can I do now? If you have months of emails and
correspondences and you can't even get into your account, and the
gmail team won't help you, what do you do?
Thanks.
This is what happened - I had a google groups account, and I wanted my
email address for the google groups to change FROM [email address]
to [email address]. The reason I wanted to change it was that
I
did not want my 'real' address going out on the groups.
I changed this, and had no idea that it would affect my gmail account.
Emails started bouncing from my gmail account, though I could still
use the account. I tried to revert it as fast as I could, and I
noticed that there was an option to revert it in the 'confirmation
email' reporting the address change. It gave me a warning that my
account would be disabled if I reverted the change (why would they do
that?). Foolishly, I made the assumption that I could re-enable it
soon by a message to the gmail team. I wanted to have emails coming in
as fast as I could.
So I said 'Yes'. And here I am, two weeks later, shut out from the
account, with no help, and with emails STILL bouncing back.
Any ideas? I know what I did was probably kind of dumb, but it seemed
expedient at the time and I did not know what the consequences would
be.
Thanks,
-D

When I try to log in at the gmail end, btw, it does not tell me that
my account is disabled, but rather tells me that user name and password
do not match. However, in some other circumstance, it says that that
user name does not exist (can't remember right now what that situation
is). However, when I try to make a 'new' account with that user name,
it says it is 'unavailable'. This confirms for me that it seems to
still exist but be disabled in some way.
One other thing, if you registered a username with a dot in it you
have to log on using the dot exactly as you registered it. Even
though gmail will deliver mail to davidreynolds or david.reynolds you
would have to log in as david.reynolds, otherwise you will get a
message like you are getting.

What do they mean? It's like talking to a malfunctioning robot.

The thing is, I still have the password. I'm just locked out. If the
account still exists, all they need to do is 'enable' it and I should
be able to get in with my password.
I was using Gmail and the GTalk client just fine, when suddenly Gmail
stopped working. Now logging in gives me the "Server Error" message.
I can log in fine to all my other Google services using the same email
address. I can also log into my other Gmail account just fine.
Furthermore, I can see that I have new messages via the GTalk notifier,
which even lets me read snippets.
This is very scary.
This appears to be happening to Gmail users all over:
