I work in downtown D.C. and get on the Internet via WiFi. For the past
month, I've noticed in the afternoons, the GMAIL gets slow to load and
more often than not refuses to send messages. It lets me compose new
messages and receives messages from outside, but when I hit the send
button it, it just goes into a "Working" and "Still working" freeze.

This may have something to do with the constancy of your internet
connectivity. Either too many users are logged in to the WLAN servers
at that time clogging network traffic, or your connectivity
periodically drops due to the same reasons.
